  • New Flava in Your Ear: New Music from Kanye, Keane &…Wayne Brady???

*Shit, I just realized I accidentally stole the original title of this blog…oops! My bad!!

Since we’re in the fourth quarter and new music is flying fast and furious, I figured now would be a good time to check out some of the new music bouncing across the airwaves, since there’s so much of it. I think we’re gonna go with four titles a week until January or February when the release schedule thins and there’s not as much to check out. Anyhow, this week I bring you new music from the mouth that roared, an underrated British trio, an Irish band following up a Platinum record, and…Wayne Brady. Yes, THAT Wayne Brady. Off we go…

Kanye West “Love Lockdown” (from “808’s & Heartbreak”, due December)

I wasn’t sure what to think when Kanye premiered this on the VMAs last week. I guess I wasn’t used to not only Kanye standing stock still on stage, but also there was the little fact that he was singing instead of rapping. A few listens later, I actually like the track-which I guess is a recurring theme with Mr. West because it took me a long time to appreciate the early singles off of his last two albums (‘Diamonds from Sierra Leone” and “Stronger”). It’s definitely one of those late-night, pulsing records that’s not exactly dance, but not exactly…whatever the opposite of dance is. This is one of the rare occasions where the whole autotune thing doesn’t bug me as much.

  • MHW News Roundup: Estelle Has an iTunes Oops, Noel Gallagher Gets What For & More!!

Hey folks, here are some of the headlines floating through the music world this week, and no, I’m not talking about Kanye West’s arrest.

“American Boy”…now you see it…now you don’t…now you see it again!!

Following the lead of Kid Rock, whose “Rock & Roll Jesus”album has sold 2 million copies + without any digital media services, Atlantic Records pulled British singer’s “American Boy”off of iTunes about two weeks ago, although the song had climbed into the Top Ten on the Billboard charts. This was done with the intention of spurring album sales-remember back in the days when labels would take singles out of print or not release them at all to get you to buy the album? Same premise. However, fans didn’t exactly take the bait. Estelle’s “Shine” (which is a legitimately good album) actually FELL in sales last week. Lo and behold, “American Boy” is now available digitally again. Don’t you just love the record industry?

Here’s the video for Estelle’s smokin’ new single “Pretty Please (Love Me)”

  • MHW Liveblogs The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards: This Could Be Interesting…

Tonight marks the 25th anniversary of the MTV Video Music Awards. If you’re like the majority of people, this event doesn’t excite you. The show has taken such a dive in quality over the past decade or so that I actually skipped last year’s ceremony-and I’m a music awards show junkie. I almost skipped tonight’s show as well, but since my plans for the evening fell through, I’m hanging out here with you, live, as the magic, the drama, and/or the disaster unfolds.

*I have already noticed one good thing-this year’s show is only two hours long (I wrote two years originally…Freudian slip?). It’s the perfect amount of time for me to get annoyed without feeling like I want to kick a hole in the TV.

*I’ve actually already noticed another thing: this Russell Brand or Bland or whatever his name is? Douchebag.

*I’ve only caught about 15 minutes of the pre-show. The hosts are a bunch of no-name guys, the pretty blank space country singer Taylor Swift, some obnoxious Brit (this seems like a running gag tonight), Sway’s sellout ass and John Norris, who is older than all the other co-hosts combined.

*Britney is opening tonight. You’ve gotta figure anything would be better than that performance of “Gimme More”, right?

*Sorry. I want to marry Jonah Hill. There, I said it. If Jonah Hill has a gay twin brother, please call or email me.
