    Rest in peace, Joe Cocker…

Joe Cocker has died of lung cancer at age 70

Like so many other people, I was saddened to get the news last night about soulful British singer Joe Cocker, who died of lung cancer. I grew up listening to Cocker’s gravelly, sexy, and unique sound. In recent years, Cocker and his wife, Pam, had been living in Crawford, Colorado, where they had started the Cocker Kids’ Foundation, a local charity in support of the youth in their adopted community. I am sure the people of Crawford will remember Joe Cocker for his generosity, aside from his memorable music.

Joe Cocker’s awesome cover of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends”.

Though I wasn’t around when Cocker got his start in the music business, my generation will always remember Cocker’s “With A Little Help From My Friends”. It was the theme song for the hit 80s era show, The Wonder Years. Of course, children of the 80s will also remember Cocker’s beautiful duet with Jennifer Warnes for the blockbuster film, An Officer and A Gentleman. I have to admit, that film is one of my all time favorites and so is “Up Where We Belong”.

This is such a beautiful love song and Cocker’s gruff vocals are such an interesting contrast to Warnes’ silky smooth soprano.

When I was in college, I had a roommate who used to play one of Cocker’s live albums all the time. I became more familiar with his music and realized that performing live, he must have been an incredible sight to see. Speaking of live performances, here’s a somewhat recent one with Cocker singing his 1974 hit, “You Are So Beautiful.” Lots of women and probably more than a few men swooned to this one.

I find myself getting a little choked up over this right now. If there’s one thing Joe Cocker did well, it was conveying emotion in his music.

Want to rock a little? In 1970, Joe Cocker famously covered “The Letter”, a song originally made popular in 1967 by The Box Tops, and made it his own.

Remember when people actually wrote letters instead of emails? I kind of miss those days.

And then there was the downright bluesy, sexy, sax infused “You Can Leave Your Hat On”…

Take it off… take it all off. But you can leave your hat on.

The bluesy trend was also in Cocker’s version of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright”.

“Feelin’ Alright” is another cover song Joe Cocker made his own.

And who can resist the suggestive sexiness of Cocker’s cover of The Beatles’ “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”?

Here’s a video from 1970 featuring Leon Russell.

Joe Cocker had an amazing career and will always be remembered for his gritty, distinctive vocals, his incredible energy, and his indelible original musical stamp on songs that were written by other people. The world of rock and roll has lost a true legend and the people of Crawford, Colorado have lost a good, and according to news reports, surprisingly down-to-earth and regular citizen. May Joe Cocker rest in peace and may peace be with his family.

  • Holiday music Straight No Chaser style…

Holiday music Straight No Chaser style…

Getting sick of the usual Christmas music? It’s time you took it Straight No Chaser style!

My cousin, Justin, is a professional musician and he’s about to move to Nashville to be in a new band. Knowing how talented Justin is, I trust his taste in music. This morning, I noticed he had a video on his Facebook timeline by a group called Straight No Chaser. To show you how out of touch I am, I noticed the date on the video was June 19, 2009! They went viral and I was totally unaware of their existence! Where have I been?

Straight No Chaser is a group that came from a men’s acapella group originally from Indiana University.

A record executive heard these guys and they ended up with a recording contract. They’ve since come out with a couple of albums after their original version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” turned into a smash hit. Naturally, I had to listen to more of their music and discovered their latest gem, “Text Me Merry Christmas”.

Kristen Bell joins SNC on the recorded version of “Text Me Merry Christmas”, a song that reminds us just how important our phones have become.

Since Kristen Bell was unavailable for a performance on the Today Show, Laura Osnes sang with them.

This is the first Christmas my husband hasn’t been on active duty with the Army. As a former Army wife, I can see why this song would be very relatable to anyone who has a spouse or a significant other in a job that takes them far away from home. I was lucky enough to get to spend every holiday season with my husband; he only missed one birthday when he was on active duty and we were married. But I know a lot of other people who have missed a lot of Christmases. And there’s nothing like getting a text from someone you love if they can’t be with you in person, right?

SNC offers a fresh, fun take on “The Nutcracker”.

I’m a big fan of the original Nutcracker, but I think I could get into this performance! It definitely offers a little spicing up to the usual holiday songs that get trotted out year after year!

“Carol of the Bells” done SNC style.

I think SNC’s version of “Carol of the Bells” is one of the most unique renditions I’ve heard. As a singer myself, I have appreciation to the skill, timing, and precision it takes to pull off an acapella performance like this.

An updated version of “The Grinch”.

Great. Now I feel like watching Christmas specials…

I have a feeling I’ll be adding these guys to my holiday music mix this year! Hot young guys who can sing and have a sense of humor– what a great combination!

  • Fascinating Aïda

    Fascinating Aïda

Need a laugh? I highly recommend listening to a little Fascinating Aïda today.

There’s a video that has been passed around for awhile that is especially appropriate for people who enjoy travel and want to do it cheaply. I first became aware of it when my friend Bruce posted it to my Facebook wall. It surfaced again the other day in a military Facebook group of which I am a member.

He’s a hilarious song about cheap flights… Anyone who has flown on Ryanair can relate. Personally, I spring for a less chintzy airline, not that it matters much.

This song cracked me up quite a bit. Not only are the women in this video great singers, but their lyrics are hysterical. I had to find out more about them, so I visited their Web site. I learned more about the talented folks who make up Fascinating Aïda, a musical comedy cabaret group that has been around since the dark ages of 1983. Fascinating Aïda was founded by original members, Dillie Keane, Marilyn Cutts, and Lizzie Richardson. From 1983 until 1989, the three original members made people laugh with their brand of hilarious music. In 1984, Adele Anderson joined the group. Anderson and Keane are still members today, joined by Liza Pullman.

Issy Van Randwyck sings “Song of Singapore”.

Many other singers have been a part of this popular British group, including Issy Van Randwyck, a singer I came to know after purchasing The Glory of Gershwin, a compilation of Gershwin songs featuring work by the great harmonica player, Larry Adler. Van Randwyck sang a great version of “I’ll Build A Stairway to Paradise.”

I have many friends who are teachers… and quite a few are English teachers. I know one in particular who will relate to this brilliantly.

And since it’s Christmas, it’s only fitting that I include this very rude Christmas song. Be warned. It’s not safe for work.

This is good every day advice, but it especially applies during the holidays…

Given the way the stock market has been performing lately, this song should be required viewing for anyone who has invested… I have been watching my stocks fall with dismay.

I probably should have listened to this song before I invested.

Now that I live in Germany again, it may be time to take a trip to London and see these ladies perform live. For now, I may have to content myself with one of their DVDs. As funny as the music is, it’s even better to watch them.
