  • The X Factor USA Recap: Season 3 – And Then There Were 13

X Factor USA recapAfter last week, the top twelve was set. However, much like Simon used to do on American Idol, they kept a wild card. After being given the boot last week, Josh Levi came back to the show as the mentors thought he deserved another chance. Oh, how nice?

The theme of the night was Motown which meant Kelly Rowland was looking as much like Diana Ross as she could look.

It’s unfortunate that instead of trying to replicate the fun Motown sound, many of the singers chose to slow the songs down so that they could show off their voices. What happened is that instead of a fun night of television, it was a pretty drab night on the X Factor.

Let’s get to the X Factor USA recap:

    Performances of the night

You mean other than Rachel Potter’s legs?

I will say that Khaya Cohen is my favorite voice in the competition because she sounds so much like Amy Winehouse and that’s a voice that we’re missing in music today. She unnecessarily sultry-ed up My Girl, but it allowed her to show off the voice. It’s hard to believe that she’s just sixteen.

Lillie McCloud had to kill Motown night. And I think she did. I’m not sure how a 54-year old could not be outdated. Let’s not try and make her young. What’s special about her? She’s a 54-year old hot grandmother out-singing everyone! She performed one of the better versions of Stevie Wonder’s All In Love Is Fair you’ll hear.

I’m a sucker for girl groups. Last year it was Fifth Harmony. This year, it’s Sweet Suspense. They remind me of an American version of the Spice Girls, which is right up my girl group alley. They performed You Keep Me Hangin’ On and it was fun, Fifth Harmony-y, and everything I want from a girl group. I hope they stick around for a long time.

    Duds of the night

Carlos Guevara is very popular, partly because of his story and partly because of his crazy nice voice. It’s smooth and more powerful than it should be. But he was amateur to the core. He had zero stage presence with his What’s Going On performance, looked nervous and was out of his league. However, because of his popularity, there’s no way he goes home anytime soon.

Tim Olstad is the weirdest contestant. He doesn’t look like he’s having any fun and he receives feedback in a very painful way. I’m wincing while the mentors are telling him what they think while he squints hard. Thankfully, Simon enjoyed his performance of I’ll Be There, which was just okay.

Someone thought that Carlito Olivero should slow down Stop! In the Name of Love to a crawl. You mean, one of the most energetic and fun Motown songs ever? It was awful. There’s a good chance that Carlito may be on his way home.

    Who are the front runners?

I think it’s fairly obvious that Restless Road is the main front runner right now, much like Emblem3 was last year. I find them a bit cheesy, but I get their appeal (definition: the girls love them).

Alex & Sierra are easy to enjoy. They’re the only boyfriend/girlfriend couple in the competition and really, let’s face facts, Sierra is cuter than all get out. I can also see this backfiring on them, but for now, I think they’ll get major love from America.

    Who goes home?

It’s quite possible that Josh Levi may leave again, even though his rendition of Who’s Lovin’ You was at the very least, the middle of the pack. I think it’s going to be between painful Tim Olstad and cheesy Carlito Olivero. The wild card here is Rachel Potter because it seems that the females hate her. But I do hope she sticks around for a while.

If I have to make a call, I’m going with Carlito.

On Wednesday night’s final performance show, Candice whipped Kree like she stole something.

Much like I wrote Wednesday night on the American Idol finale 2013, there have been some terrible voting decisions by America. There’s no way Lee DeWyze should’ve beat Crystal Bowersox. And in the worst one of all, there’s no way Kris Allen could hold Adam Lambert’s jockstrap in a suitcase.

Thus, it’s plausible that Kree (who I’ve nicknamed Kreeyore for her sourpuss performance face) can win this show. Of course, if she did, it would mean America was deaf.

It’s time to go blog this time capsule style:

0:11 – After the final 12 did the customary group performance opener, The Band Perry started performing Done and you know who showed up to help out. If you said Bucky Covington, you’d be wrong. It was Janelle!

0:17 – Shots fired! After a slightly funny package about all the guys leaving early which ended up with Jordin Sparks pretending to mastermind it, she tells them that their future will be okay because Idol leftovers have been doing really well on The Voice. Zing!

0:20 – The top 5 boys perform a medley and Frankie Valli comes out to sing Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You. Lauryn Hill must’ve been busy paying taxes tonight.

0:29 – Our girl Mariah performed a quick medley. It’s kind of what I’ve been waiting for all season long.

0:38 – American Idol loved them some Emeli Sandé this season. She and Amber Holcomb did a duet on stage. For some reason, Amber was wearing some camo stretch pants with gold heels.

0:53 – I’ve determined that Keith Urban is much more entertaining while bobbing his head and singing along to other’s performances than he is performing himself.

0:57 – Candice performed a Natalie Cole song with Jennifer Hudson and it was pretty cool to see them try to out-diva each other. Candice’s confidence is inspiring to see.

1:05 – Angie Miller and the great Adam Lambert performed Titanium. Lambert doesn’t get enough props for how big he got after Idol. He’s the forgotten Idol superstar. Jessie J, who is Angie’s idol, showed up and performed with Angie. Mariah threw out a look that said that she wasn’t quite into Jessie.

1:10 – After watching Angie have a blast on stage and be so charismatic, Kree must be wondering how the heck she made it to the final two.

1:21 – Not Keith Urban shredding, Randy Jackson on bass, or Travis Barker on drums could save Kree and her performance of Where The Blacktop Ends. Kree is usually at a 3 and she ramped it up to a 5, but she needed to be a 10 on finale night.

1:32 – Aretha Franklin performed from New York while the top five girls sang backup. I think Aretha should’ve been on the diva showdown with J-Hud and Candice.

1:49 – Jennifer Lopez is a beautiful woman. Terrible singer, but beautiful woman. Pitbull is a terrible rapper. Terrible rapper, but terrible rapper.

2:01 – And the winner is…Kreeyore! Okay, just kidding. America wasn’t that dumb this year.

    Candice Glover!

One last Nicki gif for the season – will she be back?

Tonight’s American Idol featured quite a surprise. I predicted that Kree would go home after Wednesday’s performances. And let’s just say that didn’t happen.

But the real news was that Randy Jackson was leaving his judge’s chair after 12 seasons.

This has been a very weird season. All along, it seemed like the judges would only be around for the year, and with Jackson gone, it seems like the rest of the judges will also leave the sinking ship. Can’t we sign these judges to two year deals?

    Who rocked the stage?

Lauren Alaina surprisingly took the stage with the first single from her second album, called Barefoot And Buckwild. Alaina looked good, dropping some weight in the proces while still showing that young fire that she had a few years ago while battling Scotty McCreary.

Alicia Keys showed up with short hair while performing Tears Always Win. Swizz Beatz must’ve been proud.

While Mariah Cary didn’t necessarily perform live, she did show off her new music video for #Beautiful with Miguel. I’m not sure what the hash tag is for. The song is very Miguel, but the video is very Mariah. She was trying to shake what her mama gave her throughout.

Who is going to the final two?

It was a very interesting final two to say the least.

If you started watching from the beginning, there were two contestants who stood above the others. Those two were Candice and Kree (Summer). But when the smoke cleared, Angie had surpassed Kree (Summer) and Kree looked like she had lost her smile. So when the vote came down Thursday night, of course it was Angie who was eliminated in a surprise of all surprises. I had Angie pegged for winning.

As it turns out, what we expected from the beginning has come true. It’s Kree (Summer) vs. Candice. And Nicki says to work it.
