    Boy Bands of the 1980s…

My recent obsession with Menudo has me thinking about boy bands from the 80s this week…

When I was a teenager, I wasn’t into boy bands. I liked what was then called classic rock, music that is way older than I am. Back in my day, we had our share of boy bands. The New Kids On The Block were a big hit, as were New Edition. I preferred New Edition to New Kids, but I know a lot of my friends were fans of the slick dancing moves and silky harmonies both boy bands offered.

New Kids On The Block’s big hit, “Please Don’t Go Girl”.

Watching that video makes me suddenly feel ancient. It doesn’t seem like high school was that long ago, but it really was. The woman in the video looks a little too mature for the boys in New Kids On The Block, anyway. After “Please Don’t Go Girl” became a hit, New Kids On The Block became very popular. For awhile, they could do nothing wrong. But then they started to grow up and so did their audience. By the 1990s, they had become decidedly uncool. They changed their name to NKOTB, probably because New Men On The Block didn’t seem very catchy.

New Kids gets edgy with “Hangin’ Tough.

“Candy Girl” came out in 1983. I think I might have liked New Edition more because I was a lot younger when they made it big.

A live performance of “Mr. Telephone Man”.

Menudo was another boy band that was big in the 80s. I was first introduced to their very Latin sound when I was taking Spanish in school. My teacher was from Cuba and loved their music, so she shared it with the class.

Here’s a video that features a very young Ricky Martin. I watch him wagging his ass and want to say, “Get it, boy!”

Ricky Martin when he was brand new to Menudo… He was about 13 here.

I didn’t like Menudo’s music that much back then, but I must admit I’ve been watching their old videos over the past few days. I can see why they were such a popular boy band back in the day. And Menudo avoided the problems associated aging bands. In most cases, members of Menudo were forced into retirement when they turned 16 or, in Ray Reyes’ case, when they grew too tall for the band.

I suppose I could add other bands to this post. The Jacksons and The Osmonds could probably be considered boy bands, except they came from large singing families. And by the 80s, they were men, not boys. Watching these videos, I can’t help but wonder how these guys feel when they see themselves decked out in matching outfits, dancing and singing in front of a bunch of screaming girls. I think about the hours of rehearsals they must have endured to perfect those dance steps. And now, thirty years later, I wonder if the experience of being in a boy band was worth it to them. Money, fame, boyish good looks, and slick dance moves… who wouldn’t want to have those things going for them?

    I can’t help but remember South Park’s hit song…

Watching boy bands makes me feel like a good finger bang…

  • Is It Just Me Or…

Is it just me or…is Baby By Me the greatest Ne-Yo song ever, until 50 Cent comes in and then it becomes the worst 50 Cent song ever?
First it’s her neck, yeah then her back
Yeah I’m a freak, I get into all that
Girl I perform for ya, like a porno star
Till ya had enough then I just need a little bit more

Yep, the dude has to bite a Khia song these days.

Is it just me or…does Lady GaGa need to throw the New Kids On The Block a bone?
The first time I ever heard of Lady GaGa was on the terrible Big Girl Now cut on the New Kids latest album The Block. She was even on their comeback tour. Then she blows up. How about getting the Boston boys on a track and releasing it as a single GaGa? How about having them join you on your burning piano? Throw the dudes a bone!

Speaking of things related to the New Kids, is it just me or should Mark Walhberg stop pretending that he wasn’t a white-boy rapper in the 90s named Marky Mark?

And to even take it a step beyond, I think he should make a comeback. Since he’d never do it without pretending that it wasn’t him, I say we take it to the next level. How about he raps with a luchador mask on and comes out as MC Invincible, which was the name of one of his films? Ok, fine, I know that’s just me.

Is it just me or should Kris Allen have marketed himself as the anti-Glambert?
Since Lambert decided to go way over the top as a drama queen in marketing his album, couldn’t Allen have just done the opposite and reached out to all the people who were just disgusted with Lambert? I would’ve looked at all the markets that did the lowest TV ratings for Lambert’s set on the American Music Awards and immediately booked concerts in those areas and called myself Kris “No Nail Polish And Make-Up” Allen.

Is it just me or is Beyonce the hottest thing in the world until she starts performing and makes mugs that make her eyes bulge out?
If you don’t believe, you only need click here. I have no idea why she feels the need to make that face over and over again during her concerts. And to add to that, if you take Jay-Z’s mean mug when he throws down his B-boy stance, you have the muggin’est couple in music.

  • SonicClash’s Memorial Day Triple Play

Hey folks, it’s the beginning of summer! Break out the sunglasses and shorts, because the warm weather is upon us! There’s no shortage of tunes to blast out of your boombox on those beach trips (do people still use boomboxes?), but here are a couple of my favorite songs that celebrate the season. Play them and enjoy the good vibes.

If you like your summer songs spiked with a little bit of nostalgia, then NKOTB’s “Summertime” is for you.

Next up is my man Doug E. Fresh with his own “Summertime” from 1990. This is by far the rarest of the three songs here, and the fact that embedding is disabled grinds my gears a little bit. Check out the hip-house influence in the song, and also check out a very brief cameo from Sean “Diddy” Combs at the beginning of the video.

I think you can all guess what’s next. As I do every year, a summertime kickoff isn’t complete without DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. Enjoy, and have a great Memorial Day weekend (we’ll still be here, so don’t forget to check in when you have a free sec!)
