  • Friday Throwback – I’ll Be Your Everything

Who is Tommy Page? I mention the name Tommy Page to anyone and I get nothing but blank stares.

Tommy Page is a product of sappy, early 90s pop music. Page actually opened up for the New Kids On The Block when his debut album was released. After touring with them, they lent a helping hand on his second album, Paintings In My Mind, which spawned his number one single, I’ll Be Your Everything. You can hear the New Kids influence on the song. Jordan Knight is on the hook and he hits one of his ball busting, groin punch falsettos, which kind of overshadows Tommy.

    – Ya, I don’t get the ballet theme either.

    – Sing in your highest voice possible – “I’ll be your friend”.

    – Is Tommy wearing leather trousers or are they Z. Cavaricci’s?

    – And while we’re at it, where’s his bolo tie?

    – Since when is the word “last” pronounced “la-hast”?

    – Yet again I must ask you to sing in your highest voice possible – “I’ll be your friend”.

    – “Just reach for me, I’ll be the one to set you free.”

I do have some bonus Tommy Page coverage for you. If someone does remember Tommy Page when I bring up that name, it’s for this little gig he did below. Tommy Page!!!!!!!!!!

  • Friday Throwback – Poison

I watched the new Seth Rogan and Judd Apatow movie Pineapple Express last weekend and though it was funny in parts, it was just ok. But what I really enjoyed was the in movie soundtrack. There were a few shout outs to the early 90s, including this gem by Bell Biv Devoe. I figured that I wasn’t a true New Edition/BBD fan if I didn’t then make this my choice for Friday Throwback.

I’m going to take you back to 1990 and I think I’m still in the 8th grade. I’m not really sure if I knew what a low pro ho was back then, but I guess that was for the better.

    – Ricky Bell’s wail is one of the most underrated wails of all time. Who doesn’t know this song immediately when he starts to yell about how it’s driving him out of his mind.

    – Words to live by – “Never trust a big butt and a smile.”

    – That’s some bad video editing. Why are small women dancing on top of the screen while these guys are in the club?

    – You know, you put a wig on Devoe, and chop him down about half a foot, and this man could pass for a woman.

    – This is some wack dance choreography. I think they just gave up trying to get moves right together.

    – Did Biv say that he was quacking the hoes, or clockin’ em?

    – Yo slick blow …

    – And then they leave you with the double ass shot to finish the video.

I also think that one of the dictionary definitions for poison should include the Bell Biv Devoe definition.

    poi·son –noun
    1. a substance with an inherent property that tends to destroy life or impair health.
    2. something harmful or pernicious, as to happiness or well-being: the poison of slander.
    3. a big butt and a smile that you cannot trust

  • Friday Throwback – My Lucille

I may have mentioned this before, but back in the day, my dad used to record videos from MTV and VH-1, when those channels used to pretty much solely play music videos. I was able to see some pretty sweet stuff.

One of those videos I remember watching was by B. B. King. It was a weird video where Dan Akroyd, Michelle Pfeiffer (who I thought was Jane Curtain), Steve Martin, and Eddie Murphy were his band mates. All I really remember from the video was Eddie smiling on the drums and Steve Martin screwing up the choreography. Ever since YouTube became the place to find this kind of stuff, I’ve been looking for this video. I found it.

What I’ve been able to figure out so far is that B. B. King was in a movie with Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldbloom called Into The Night. This video was probably a result of him having a song on the soundtrack. That makes a lot of sense because I never knew why Pfeiffer was at the beginning of the video. And now that I notice, Goldbloom is in it as well. Enjoy.

    – Who is that mustachioed guy on the guitar? He’s the only one I can’t make out.

    – B. B. has once dance move.

    – Smile until it hurts Ed.

    – Ed has some hair on him.

    – Pfeiffer couldn’t hold it in when Martin screwed up his moves. She was cracking up.

    – That’s a mighty bar crowd there.

    – I wish I could belt it out like B. B. King. “My Lucille!!!!!!!!!”

    – Who are those guys hosting? At least one guy was rockin’ a Michael Jackson Thriller shirt.
