  • Friday Throwback – I Feel For You

When I was growing up, I thought that Chaka Khan was like this B-girl who made music that people liked to break dance to. Little did I know that she was historically one of the greatest female soul singers of all time, and originally in the group Rufus. Why did I think that? Because of this song.

    Chaka-chaka-chaka-khan.

    Chaka-chaka-chaka-khan.

    • I thought Turbo and Ozone were supposed to be in every Chaka Khan video.
    • I feel for you Chaka … I think I love you too Chaka.
    • That white dude was gettin’ down.
    • I’ve always wondered why she stood next to a half gated fence throughout.
    • I saw just a tiny bit of the Re-Run dance. Word to Fred Berry. RIP.
    • Did they just moonwalk off that ramp?
    • I like the scarves deal, but Turbo has to dance with a broom again.
    • I always liked it when Fingertips Part 2 all of a sudden came out of nowhere in this song.
    • How many takes until Chaka got the scratchin’ part right?
    • Turbo should’ve been a bigger star than he was.

I believe Prince wrote this, and I’ve heard that Stevie actually played on this record, but I’m not sure. I think I also heard that Grandmaster Melle Mel was on the record as well (I’m not hip hop enough to know what he even looks like, sad to say). Mike, you need to help me out here.

She actually has a new album out called Funk This.

  • Friday Throwback – Go For It

I took a bit of a hiatus from the Friday Throwback and I want to give a shout out to Money Mike for picking it up for me. I needed a bit of a break to get the creative juices flowing again. But I’m coming back with a vengeance. Well maybe not, unless you like Joey B. Ellis. Who is Joey B. Ellis for the 95% of you who probably think I need to take a longer hiatus? Um, I’m not really sure. Dude doesn’t even have a wikipedia page. But really, he just wants you to go for it.

    – Why is a shirtless Hammer in some tight drawers, introducing the video? I almost forgot. Joey B. Ellis was on his label.

    – To be or not to be dope, that’s the question.

    – Why do you see Rocky Balboa you ask? Well, this was the lead single to that great movie, Rocky V.

    – I know that’s not B Angie B singing background. Where is she these days anyway?

    – And while we’re at it, what about Oaktown 3.5.7.?

    – I wonder who would’ve won between Joey B. Ellis and The Fresh Prince? We know they couldn’t beat Mike Tyson.

    – I think this might hold the record for most versions of the running man in a music video.

    – This might be the only video in the world where a girl wearing head gear and a pointed bra twirling the American flag fits right in.

    – I think Sly needed to be in the video thinking Joey B. Ellis was Apollo’s son.

  • Friday Throwback – I’ve Been Waiting for You

Way back in 1990, when the New Kids on the Block were the hottest thing since sliced bread, NBC decided to counter NKOTB’s own cartoon with a live-action show featuring five guys who sang and danced. The name? The Guys Next Door (get it? New Kids on the Block…Guys Next…oh, never mind). Anyway, these five young men were really more of a cross between the New Kids and the Monkees, as their eponymous TV show (nestled in between “Saved By the Bell” and “Saturday Night Videos”) contained comedy sketches in addition to clips of the guys singing.

Anyway, the Guys also put out an album. Unfortunately, no one bought it. Apparently no one watched the TV show either, since it was cancelled after only one season. Damn Zack and Slater!

Their one hit was a pretty (if sappy and simply written) ballad called “I’ve Been Waiting for You”. I remember this song being #1 on Z-100’s Top 9 at 9 countdown for friggin’ ever, but the success among teen girls (and, OK, a couple of teen guys) didn’t translate into much. “Waiting” topped out at unlucky #41 (geez, that’s gotta be worse than having a #2 single).

The video is what would become standard boy band fare just 6 or 7 years later. Watch out for the funny ending though. Wonder whatever became of these dudes anyway?
