  • “Like I Never Left”-Whitney’s Back!

I’ll admit that I’ve never been the world’s biggest Whitney Houston fan. She’s held my interest for 2 or 3 songs per album, though, and I certainly won’t deny that she’s in possession of an amazing voice. A voice that, to my ears, has gotten better as she’s aged. Her last two studio albums, “My Love is Your Love” and “Just Whitney” found her tackling material that was a bit more mature and substantial than the likes of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and those God-awful Michael Masser ballads that she started her career singing.

As anyone on the planet Earth knows, Whitney’s career has been derailed by all sorts of drama: the tempestuous marriage to Bobby Brown and subsequent divorce, problems with various substances that left the former model looking like the sister of Pookie as played by Chris Rock in “New Jack City”, the fact that her daughter Bobbi Kristina is already going to need YEARS if not decades of extensive therapy. However, over the past year or so, Whitney has made several public appearances (usually in the company of her label owner/Svengali Clive Davis) and has looked damn good. While rumors of a new album have been floating for quite a while, we finally get our first taste of the scheduled-for-November release with “Like I Never Left”.

And the verdict? It’s a pretty good song, with a mellow, summery vibe. It’s not a blow-the-doors-open huge single, but Whitney’s in fine voice, the song doesn’t try too hard to align itself with current trends, and Akon (by some strange act of God) turns out to be a pretty decent duet partner. If he can do do this for Whitney, there might be hope for that Akon/MJ collaboration after all.

Take a listen for yourself. What do you think?

  • NKOTB + NE = Hit Single?!?

It’s the boy band equivalent of a supergroup.

New Kids on the Block have joined forces with their predecessors New Edition for a song called “Full Service” that will appear on NKOTB’s upcoming September release. Both groups are celebrating anniversaries this year: the New Kids are celebrating twenty years since the release of their breakthrough album “Hangin’ Tough”, and New Edition is celebrating their 25th anniversary as a group.

    New Edition\'s 1984 hit single \"Cool it Now\"

These groups share a lot of history. Both were formed in Boston, with the New Kids coming about only after New Edition had left writer/producer Maurice Starr’s camp in search of major label money. There’s been a bit of (rightful) bitterness on New Edition’s part because the New Kids were afforded opportunities that the significantly more talented NE guys weren’t- and we can probably correctly surmise that the ethnic make up of the two groups was responsible for that.

    NKOTB\'s #1 smash \"Step By Step\" from 1990

Anyway, I’m definitely looking forward to what Ronnie, Ricky, Mike, Ralph, Johnny, Donnie, Danny, Joe, Jon and Jordan will come up with (sometime N.E. member Bobby Brown did not participate in the recording session). If the New Kids and New Edition can settle their differences and work together, does that mean there’s hope for the Middle East?

  • Friday Throwback – She Ain’t Worth It

In 1990, I was in the 8th grade. At the time, anything Bobby Brown touched, I was going to listen to. Even if it was a song by a guy I’d never heard of named Glenn Medeiros. I remember seeing Medeiros and Brown perform either on The Party Machine with Nia Peeples or Into The Night With Rick Dees. Someone with a better memory needs to help me out with that one. According to Wikipedia, this song went number one on the US Hot 100 Singles chart. Though in my mind, Medeiros played second fiddle to Brown on his own song, I will never forget the guy with the curly mullet.

    – And what a great curly mullet it was …

    – Think again my friends, think again.

    – Don’t you just love the girls in those shorts and boots?

    – Glenn needs a shirt underneath that jacket.

    – I can’t do this line any justice so I’ll just quote the Bob. “One thing I hate is when a girl plays fake and tries to make me late for another date.” That might be one of the greatest lines in history.

    – I had the over/under set at 10 seconds for when Bobby would be shirtless. He beat that by at least 5 seconds.

    – Does she really just want to tell her friends that she did it again, or has Glenn just been dumped too many times?

    – You can tell how old this video is simply because the truck is a Datsun which they stopped making probably before this video even came out.

    – Did everyone have to try to do the running man in videos? Or was it just the simplest dance to do for those who couldn’t really dance?

And if you thought that 18 years later, this wasn’t on my iPod, you’d be wrong. I’m not worthy of Bobby though. I’ve never had a girl play fake and try to make me late for another date.
