  • Vital Idol: Andrew Lloyd Webber Celebrates Me Home

Last night, Mike, our own writer and editor of this great site said that Andrew Lloyd Webber looked like he could be Austin Powers’ dad. Once he said that, I knew that it was going to be a fun night. Maybe not necessarily for the music because half of the Idol contestants butchered the songs, but more so for the awkwardness of the show and how uncomfortable everyone seemed. Andrew Lloyd Webber? Really? You want Jason Castro to sing this stuff? Only Syesha Mercado truly seemed comfortable and in her element, though David Cook did a good job too.

Brooke White stopped and restarted the song because she forgot the lyrics. That’s how bad last night was. It would seem that it’s her turn to go home, but I know better than to think it’s a done deal.

The group opens up with a little ditty from Andy Lloyd Webber called All I Ask Of You. Do you think anyone has ever called him Andy in his entire life?

Ryno then interviews Lloyd Webber who says that Brooke is very talented and was flawless in rehearsal. I make all my jump shots in practice too. He also says that Jason Castro didn’t listen to him at all. I’m not sure Jason Castro’s attention span allows him to listen to anyone.

President Bush and his wife (the Bushes?) talked about Idol Gives Back and George thanked America for their compassion. He looked like he was reading from queue cards. But he didn’t look great like this man reading from queue cards.

    Let’s get to the elimination.

    – Ryno brings out both Davids and tells them they are both safe. This means that out of the remaining four, (Carly, Jason, Brooke, and Syesha) three of them are not.

    – There has been a Clay Aiken sighting. I repeat. A Clay Aiken sighting. He kind of looks like the love child of Mrs. Garrett from Diff’rent Strokes and Edward Scissorhands.

    – Leona Lewis is singing Bleeding Love and my girl Jessica just said, “Is her shirt all bloody from her bleeding heart?”

    – She’s been compared to Mariah Carey and I think she copied Mariah’s dance moves as well. She’s doing pretty good impersonating the mic stand. That’s the same dance that Mariah did last week.

    – Syesha and Brooke White are up next. Brooke is safe which means that Syesha, Jason, and Carly are in the bottom three. Syesha’s afro just puffed out three inches further after Ryno read the card. Actually, they aren’t doing a final three, just a final two.

    – Ryno brings out Carly and Jason Castro’s Dread Locks and Jason is safe. America is wacky tonight.

    – Both girls who aren’t safe have to sing again, and after watching each performance, if Syesha goes home, you’ve got your first American Idol travesty of the year.

    – Tonight, Big Rube Studdard is going to celebrate Carly Smithson home.

    – Was it the tattoos? Was it her off one week on one week performances? Was it the fact that she talked about her problems with diarrhea on the air? Her lack of consistency as well as her lack of consistency? I think it’s probably a little bit of all of those, but the fact is, Jason Castro and Brooke White are just more likable to the majority of that fan base.

    – Seacrest out! Wait, did he say Neil Diamond is on next week? Um, can we have Andrew Lloyd Webber again?

This week’s chart shows the sales bump provided by the “Idol Gives Back” special. Daughtry and Jordin Sparks both move back into the Top 20 on the albums chart, Sparks’ single reaches a new peak of #3, the fifth single from Daughtry’s 4X Platinum album debuts in the Top 20 (while the fourth single, “Feels Like Tonight”, sits at #24, and Carrie Underwood follows up last year’s version of The Pretenders’ Nineties hit “I’ll Stand by You” with a version of George Michael’s “Praying for Time”, which is new to the Top 100 at #27.
Speaking of Sparks, her debut album surpasses Taylor Hicks in sales this week, meaning that she no longer has to worry about the dubious distinction of having the lowest-selling album by an “American Idol” winner in history.
It almost pains me to say that the only artists who can boast a Top 10 single and a Top 10 album simultaneously this week are Leona Lewis (who’s vocally gifted but a complete cipher), and Ray J. (although I admit, “Sexy Can I” is kinda catchy!). In the process, Lewis becomes the first British female artist EVER to debut at #1 on the Billboard Albums chart. Take *that*, Winehouse!!
I was just reading a “Vibe” article (one of many proclaiming Li’l Wayne as the best thing since color television) that mentioned the fact that Wayne had yet to live up to the hype by scoring a major pop hit. Welllll…with “Lollipop” making it to #2 (in a crowd of very successful singles) this week, I guess we can safely say that Weezy doesn’t have to worry about *that* anymore!
    Um…who’s James Otto??
How the hell did one of those TV-advertised “Body & Soul” compilations (this one featuring Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, Mario and others) make it into the Top 20??
Speaking of Mario, his third album “Go!” has been goosed slightly since he started appearing on “Dancing with the Stars”, but at only about 275K sold since it’s December release (and no major hit single), it’s got a long way to cover before it reaches the platinum-plus heights of his last album, “Turning Point”.
Next week, Hurricane Mariah, who should leapfrog past the 500K mark with “E=MC2”, a number that will probably not only outsell the rest of the Top 10 combined, but will also immediately place her around #7 on the list of 2008’s Top 10 Albums (granted, it’s only April, but still…). It’s a long way from “Glitter”, eh?
OK, the charts were boring this week, I promise something better next week.
  • Vital Idol: Mariah Carey Says Bye Bye To …

Before I start this write-up, I wanted to mention that Music Help Web has a Twitter page. You can read us on Twitter where we update quick news items that aren’t necessarily something we’d blog about, but still are important. Now, onto the show.

Last night’s show was Mariah Carey Night. All of the remaining contestants performed Mimi’s songs and overall, I was very surprised at how well they did. I figured we were in for a tough night. While I didn’t necessarily agree with the judges that David Cook did a great version of Always Be My Baby, as the reason I like that song is because it’s fun and innocent and he took all of that away, I do think they were fair and gave everyone just about what they deserved.

    – Has anyone noticed that Randy Jackson’s side burns are nearing Brandon and Dylan levels from nearly 15 years ago?

    – The Idol contestants are performing One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and Jason Castro croaked through the very first verse. I think they told him to lip synch the rest of the way.

    – I predict a Brooke, Carly, and KL Cook bottom three by the way.

    – Ryno is splitting the folks into two groups tonight without telling them what being in either group means. In one group is Syesha, Carly, and Jason and in the other is David Cook, Brooke (straight), and KL Cook. David Archuleta is the only one not in a group.

    – A man that used to look like Elliot Yamin but has terrible facial hair and a curly mop on top of his head is singing what seems to be his next single. I wished for Trainwreck, but he’s singing Free.

    – Mariah isn’t singing Touch My Body, which I’m guessing is because she’d probably have to dance a little bit. But she’s instead singing Bye Bye and standing as straight as the mic stand.

    – She’s not as skinny as the toothpick that is Brooke White, but Mimi is looking skinny.

    – Whichever group Big Dave Archuleta joins must be the group that is safe, because it would have four members versus three.

    – That Ryno is such a sneaky guy. He just switched David Cook with Syesha. David Cook, Carly, and Jason Castro are safe along with Big Dave.

    – Syesha is safe, leaving the two blondies.

    – Brooke is safe and Big Rube Studdard will celebrate this year’s Sanjaya, KL Cook, home.

Next week is Andrew Lloyd Webber? Did I hear that right?

(I guess so – check out this message board thread.)
