  • Billy Comes Back

Not exactly the strongest vocalist when he was in his prime, former pop star Billy Joel will sing the national anthem in today’s Super Bowl. He has done Star Spangled Super Bowl duties before, and luckily, gets to perform before Prince, rather than after.

Joel also announced through his music company that All My Life, a ballad he wrote for his wife, will be streamed live on People magazine’s web site for a week beginning February 7. The song will then be for sale exclusively on iTunes for two weeks.

All My Life is the first pop music Joel has released since 1993’s River of Dreams. During the intervening 14 years, the Piano Man has seen public breakups and marriages, tours all over the world with Elton John (a fantastic show), rehab and car accidents and the blossoming career of 20 year old daughter Alexa, whose birth may have contributed more material to the Billy Joel song catalog than any other event.

Knock ’em dead, Billy. The now 58 year old singer rarely won critical acclaim. His vocals during today’s football game will undoubtedly be massacred in the media. But just maybe one of pop music’s best songwriters ever recaptured the magic in All My Life.

Why, the River of Dreams, of course. Sure, I could listen to new stuff, but I have to get in the mood for a long awaited return.

  • Four Car Brandy Collision Kills One

Brandy, whose last album was produced by Kanye West and became her biggest hit in 6 years, was involved in a car accident several weeks ago whose details are only leaking out now.

The one-time child TV from Mississippi is now a 27 year old allegedly hit another car from behind on a Los Angeles freeway. The driver of the vehicle, a 38 year old mother of one, has died according to the AP, quoting a California Highway Patrolman spokesperson. The incident touched off a four vehicle collision.

Bo Diddley’s little cousin (yep, it’s true) was traveling at a speed estimated at 65 miles per hour when her SUV started the collision. No charges have been filed against the singer or actress.

B.B. King’s 80, which won a Grammy from Best Blues Album two years ago. The now 81 year old diabetic was hospitalized this weekend, and all thoughts are with him so he is with us for many years to come.

  • Crowded House, Rage Announce Reunion Plans

Two bands gone from the public eye for years are due for comebacks in 2007 according to media reports. Crowded House, the popular band from Down Under, and Rage Against The Machine, a group often collapsing into a melange of sound, have both announced plans to reunited and tour.

Rage, the LA-based band that broke up in 2000, had #1 albums on the Billboard charts in 1996 and 1999. The band fared less well with singles play (but so did Led Zeppelin), charting only a minor hit with Guerrilla Warfare from 1999’s The Battle of Los Angeles. The song also won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance, the second of two Grammys the band took home.

Crowded House, built from the remnants of Split Enz, was an older band that was a smash throughout New Zealand and Australia. Their success translated to Europe, especially England, but never enjoyed the album success or Grammys that Rage pulled in with the exception of Don’t Dream It’s Over, a worldwide hit that reached #2 in the U.S.
