  • Motown Legend Joe Hunter Dead at 79

    Motown institution Joe Hunter, who won 3 Grammy Awards while playing with the Funk Brothers behind artists like Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Stevie Wonder has died at the age of 79.

    The cause of death this past weekend is still not known although media reports indicate tht Hunter suffered from diabetes.

    Tennessee native Hunter was Motown’s first pianist, brought on board by Berry Gordy even before the more famous Earl Van Dyke and while the music company was still called Hitsville. Among the songs he recorded during his Motown tenure were Shop Around and Do You Love Me? He was also a favorite of guitar legend John Lee Hooker.

    Fall Out Boy’s Infinity on High dropped yesterday, and while I never was impressed by the hit (This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race), I’m not liking much of the rest of the album either. Look for a comprehensive review on Music Help Web soon.

  • Eagles Set To Fly By Spring

    Billboard is quoting Eagles frontman Don Henley as saying the group’s first new studio album in nearly 20 years will be released this spring. The band’s website is mum on the release, and no tour dates have been announced in support.

    Reports in The Los Angeles Times claim that the album will be exclusively available for a year and that the band will indeed tour. The media feeding frenzy began in earnest and bits of the story are floating around the web. I’m personally more inclined to believe the statements Henley made to Billboard and wonder if we’re seeing the final payout for the band that pioneered California country-rock.

    I’m still liking Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape, especially the title track. The No Doubt singer put the world on notice with Rich Girl and the rest of her 2004 release. Sweet Escape peaked at #3 on the album charts, but has already thrown off two Top 10 songs. This one is worth adding to your collection.

  • Social Distortion Bassist Dies In Bicycle Accident

    A decade before Social Distortion broke big, a variety of musicians played with the band, including bassist Brent Liles.

    Liles is now dead at the age of 43 after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a truck.

    He played with the band for two years, including an independent release. It wasn’t until six years after he left the group that Social Distortion broke through to mainstream success with a self-titled release on Epic.

    I was disappointed that Prince didn’t introduce anything new at yesterday’s Super Bowl although he certainly rocked the house. Meanwhile, Nelly Furtado’s Say It Right from Loose is sort of bland in comparison although it is selling massive quantities.
