  • Blige and Underwood Make Unlikely Duo

If the Billboard Music Awards are any indication, Mary J. Blige should sail through the Grammys in February. These are not the popularity awards, but the actual tallies — you know, sales and money and airplay and the things that really matter.

Blige won NINE Billboard Awards yesterday in Vegas, but somehow Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts won Album of the Year. I’m simply trying to figure out how you win every award but the big one.

As far as critics go, neither would typically be hailed for producing the best album of the year, but it was a strange, singles-oriented 2006 that let the ladies slip past the soft alt-rock bands and puppy Chris Brown, who is one day going to walk away from one of those shows with nine of his own awards.

  • Snoop Redux – Chronic You Don’t Need

Reports out of Cali are that Snoop has been busted…again.

    The charges? Weapons and narcotics…again.

This time, Mr. Broadus allegedly had coke, pot and a gun.

Burbank has been bad for the rapper. He was arrested there in October on weapon and narcotics charges. Filling out his trifecta was an arrest in the OC for attempting to bring a telescoping baton (yes, a weapon) on a plane at John Wayne Airport.

There’s street cred, and then there’s just dumb cred. If Snoop doesn’t believe yet that every cop in SoCal has his picture on their dash, he’s in dreamland. In his case, we should refer back to the original meaning of the word “chronic” — as in “repeated”.

  • Rock Hall Inductee Ruth Brown Dead at 78

The woman who influenced perhaps more influential female singers, among them Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin, has died at 78.

Ruth Brown, who toured with everyone who was anyone in the 1950s, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Musicians known musicians, and if Brown’s legacy had faded over the decades (despite a mid 1970s comeback), the people playing the songs remembered.

Brown had a heart attack and stroke near her Las Vegas home.
