  • Is The World Ready For Qui?

Jerry Rice is many things. He is the greatest wide receiver in NFL history. He is a three time Super Bowl Champion. He is a great self marketer. And he’s a dancing pioneer. A Dancing With The Stars pioneer that is. His high finish on the television show opened up the flood gates for guys like Emmitt Smith to reinvent Hammer Time and for Jason Taylor to look at Hollywood as a possible career after football. Don’t act like you don’t know.

But one thing that Jerry doesn’t do well is sing. Does anyone remember the commercial years ago in which he and his 49ers brethren went to a karaoke bar and Flash 80 busted out a terrible version of Stand By Your Man?

However, there’s someone in his family who can sing. Well, sort of.

Jerry Rice’s daughter Qui is a junior at Georgetown University and is now trying to make it as a pop star. She has a new single called Rev It Up featuring David Banner, with an album set to come out later this year. Based on the video, the young Miss Rice looks to be patterning herself after Janet Jackson, with the style of Ciara and the late Aaliyah thrown in as well.

The video is nicely done and it looks like Papa Rice probably put a little bit of that Hall Of Fame money into it. Qui is young, attractive, and though she doesn’t possess a fantastic voice, is serviceable on the mic, at least compared to other pop singers out there today.

If you’re looking for Jerry to make a cameo, he’s in it, but for maybe one second. Don’t blink.

The video isn’t on YouTube just yet, but it is on what looks to be Qui’s mom’s .mac account.

  • Friday Throwback – She Ain’t Worth It

In 1990, I was in the 8th grade. At the time, anything Bobby Brown touched, I was going to listen to. Even if it was a song by a guy I’d never heard of named Glenn Medeiros. I remember seeing Medeiros and Brown perform either on The Party Machine with Nia Peeples or Into The Night With Rick Dees. Someone with a better memory needs to help me out with that one. According to Wikipedia, this song went number one on the US Hot 100 Singles chart. Though in my mind, Medeiros played second fiddle to Brown on his own song, I will never forget the guy with the curly mullet.

    – And what a great curly mullet it was …

    – Think again my friends, think again.

    – Don’t you just love the girls in those shorts and boots?

    – Glenn needs a shirt underneath that jacket.

    – I can’t do this line any justice so I’ll just quote the Bob. “One thing I hate is when a girl plays fake and tries to make me late for another date.” That might be one of the greatest lines in history.

    – I had the over/under set at 10 seconds for when Bobby would be shirtless. He beat that by at least 5 seconds.

    – Does she really just want to tell her friends that she did it again, or has Glenn just been dumped too many times?

    – You can tell how old this video is simply because the truck is a Datsun which they stopped making probably before this video even came out.

    – Did everyone have to try to do the running man in videos? Or was it just the simplest dance to do for those who couldn’t really dance?

And if you thought that 18 years later, this wasn’t on my iPod, you’d be wrong. I’m not worthy of Bobby though. I’ve never had a girl play fake and try to make me late for another date.

  • Friday Throwback – Someday (with a bonus video)

I was on Yahoo.com yesterday and noticed that a blogger was writing about Mariah Carey’s new video and how even though people think Glitter was the low point in her career, she actually got paid a ton of money to leave Virgin and only did one album for them. The blogger noted that it was a Frank Lucas’ like business decision. Mariah is Mariah in the new video and she mentions YouTube in the new song and it made me think about some of her old videos, including this one, which is most memorable for her attempt at dancing.

    • I’m guessing those jeans are the reverse of low rise.
    • Look at her shimmy and shake.
    • Baby Mariah is a little darker than regular Mariah.
    • “The one you gave away will be the only one you’re wishing for.”
    • Sometimes that blouse falls off her shoulder and then in the next scene it’s perfect. I wonder if Tommy Mottola was cracking the whip to make her pull her blouse back up.
    • There it is. The very famous terrible Mariah version of the running man.
    • Dude’s playing the drums on that bucket for a long time.

Time for a little bonus coverage. Here’s Mariah’s new video for Touch My Body.
