  • Feuding rock stars…

In this first month of 2014, my mind has gone from “peace on Earth” to feuding rock stars…

I read an interesting article yesterday about John Fogarty and his reaction to the news that his old nemesis, record company executive Saul Zaentz, had died on January 3. Saul Zaentz was 92 years old when he passed and had enjoyed a very successful career in the music business and as an independent music producer. But Zaentz and Fogarty were not friends. Before Zaentz got into the movie business, he was an executive for Fantasy Records, which he later bought. Creedence Clearwater Revival was signed to Fantasy Records and when Zaentz bought the company, he became the owner of many of their songs.

John Fogarty vs. Saul Zaentz and Tom Fogarty

In 1984, John Fogarty embarked on a solo career and released a song called “The Old Man Down The Road”, which became a hit. Zaentz sued Fogarty, accusing him of “self-plagiarism”, since he believed “The Old Man Down The Road” sounded a lot like Creedence Clearwater Revival’s hit, “Run Through The Jungle”. As owner of Fantasy Records, Zaentz owned the rights to “Run Through The Jungle”.

Fogarty famously played the songs on guitar in court and ultimately prevailed in the lawsuit. But the bitterness toward Zaentz lingered as the two traded lawsuits over the years. When the news of Zaentz’s death came out, Fogarty’s Facebook and Twitter accounts had links to Fogarty’s song, “Vanz Kant Danz”. The song was originally entitled “Zanz Kant Danz”, but Zaentz sued over that, too. Fogarty was forced to change the name of the song.

    Fogarty’s “Vanz Kant Danz”.

Although I remembered hearing about Fogarty’s legal issues over “The Old Man Down The Road” back in the 80s, I didn’t know he had this ongoing feud with Saul Zaentz. But reading about Fogarty’s legal issues made me think of the other feuding rock stars out there, keeping the music business interesting for us outsiders.

John Fogarty also famously feuded with his brother, Tom, when John was made lead singer and chief songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their animosity was such that Tom left the band in 1971. For the next nineteen years, Tom Fogarty was a solo artist, until he contracted AIDS from HIV tainted blood transfusions he received for back problems. He died September 6, 1990 from a tuberculosis infection caused by AIDS.

Don Felder vs. Don Henley and Glenn Frey

A few days ago, I wrote a post on Pop Rock Nation about children of rock stars. In that article, I mentioned Don Felder, former guitarist for The Eagles. Don Felder famously got fired from The Eagles over the financial arrangements coming out of a new contract that gave Henley and Frey more money than the other band members.

Last weekend, as I watched the documentary The History of The Eagles last week, I saw all involved parties interviewed. I heard them talk about the legal issues. One thing that struck me was the sadness on Don Felder’s face as he talked about missing the music he used to make with The Eagles. While I doubt he regrets fighting for his piece of the pie, I suspect he does regret losing his status as an Eagle. Perhaps he even misses the friendship he might have enjoyed while playing with those guys on stage. I have always liked the Eagles’ music, but I have to admit that I’m pretty turned off by all the feuding… and the fact that their latest album was initially only sold at Walmart.

    Axl Rose vs. Slash

In the late 1980s, Axl Rose and Slash (Izzy Stradlin) worked together in Guns N’ Roses. Decades later, they are extremely estranged. In a 2012 article in Rolling Stone, Slash said “[Axl Rose] hates my guts. It’s over a lot of different stuff; I don’t even know. There’s just no communication between us.” These two guys have been unable to coexist peacefully in many years. It’s a shame, too, because together they were pretty magical.

I’m sure I could sit here and write all day about rock starts who used to collaborate and now hate each other. It seems that a lot of the fighting is over money and prestige. I guess if you’re really brilliant and talented, you want to get your due. Add in the charisma and narcissism that comes with being a rock star and you’re bound to run into problems. At least John Fogarty no longer has to fight with his old enemy, now that the old man has gone on to his reward.

  • Zac Brown Band Shreds All-Stars – Grammys 2010

JoBros in the house, and the screams start early.  Need You Now and Lady Antebellum take the stage.  They’re not really country no matter how much music companies want to slot them there.  Brilliant harmonies.

CBS shills The Big Bang Theory during Best Comedy Album.  Six nominees and Colbert wins for a cute skit that turned into a record.  And for this we’ve given up a Kings of Leon or a jazz or a blues performance?  Or maybe even that, whaddya call it?  Classical.

Off of commercial, Norah Jones and Ringo Starr.  Remember, Norah’s dad and Ringo go way back.  Bobby Darin gets a Lifetime Achievement Award as Mack The Knife plays.  Ringo pumps up the audience for Norah.

Beyonce’s Halo, I Gotta Feeling by the Peas, Use Somebody by Kings of Leon, Gaga’s Poker Face and Taylor Swift’s You Belong With Me are the nominees.   Kings of Leon pull off another huge upset.  Peas and Swift were safe here.  Good for the Academy voters.

Robert Downey, Jr. is introduced as the most self-important actor of his generation which is a joke gone bad or a horrible intro.  He is Sue’s at Movie Rewind’s main dude. Gotta give it to Jamie Foxx who can make an intro.  Autotune at The Grammys is a big no-no in my book especially when we all know Jamie can sing.  Some weirdness when Jamie’s mic seemed to cut in and a different timbre was heard.  I’m just saying…  T-Pain who is never losing AutoTune regardless of venue prances a bit. The whole thing is a bit muddy for stars this talented.

It’s the big jam as Slash enters with hat and blazing guitar.

Katy Perry, kind of looking like his daughter, shows up with Alice Cooper.  They give  Florence Greenberg a posthumous  Trustee Award and start naming   Best Rock Album nominees.

Best Rock (Kid Rock?  Rock of Ages?) whatever that means anymore, goes to Green Day.  That’s a strange choice with Dave Matthews and the album I thought had won, AC/DC’s Black Ice.  Insiders Butch Vig and Chris Lord-Alge get name checked by Billie Joe Armstrong who doesn’t let anyone else talk.  He writes great hooks, but I’m getting bored with Billie Joe again.   This happened after Dookie too.

Chris O’Donnell shills one of the NCIS shows.  He throws a lifetime award to Harold Bradley.  He then gives way for Zac Brown Band and Leon Russell.  I would say Leon looks great, but between the shades, big white hat and beard, I couldn’t say.

He sounded great though as did the protracted acapella version of America that opened the segment.  Brilliant, brilliant band.  Harmony.  Lyrics.  America.  Shredding acoustic guitar solo.  These guys will be around on a decade.

  • American Idol Season 8 – Down To The Nitty Gritty

Last night was a weird show. They weren’t convinced that they could get more than one performance per contestant in without going over the time so thus, we got duets that didn’t really count.

Slash was the mentor and he was pretty much just there to sit like a statue in the audience. I wasn’t sure if it was him or a wax statue until he smirked one time.

Tonight, we get down to the nitty gritty. It’s time to cut down to the top three.

Ryno just called Randy, “the bomb.com”. I wonder if he knew where he was going to send viewers. Don’t go there unless you want a t-shirt that says, “Pedalphile”, as in, someone who has a lead foot.

Paula Abdul is going to perform tonight as well. No word on whether or not MC Skat Kat will join her. But I bet you Arsenio Hall tunes in tonight and thinks, “Damn, I used to get at that.”

The contestants are performing with Slash on School’s Out.

Tickets go on sale this weekend for the Idol Live Tour. Woohoo! I mean, good for them.

Paula is ready to take the stage. I remember that my buddy at one point said that he wished that Paula Abdul was his wife and that Janet Jackson was his mistress. Yes, this was in 1990.

She’s performing (I’m Just) Here For The Music, which we linked to yesterday on the site.

The girl can still move. I have to give it up. Though, there was one part where she decided to go to a mic stand and she still had the headset mic on. Why don’t you just tell those who don’t know that you’re lip synching?

By the way, I think John Stamos and Emilio Estevez just shed a tear at the same time while watching.

No Doubt is performing tonight? Oh yes, I nearly forgot, they’re going out on tour in the summer. Dag, Gwen Stefani has shoulders like a linebacker. I was kind of waiting for her to bust into, “This shit is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s,” but it didn’t happen. Oh well.

She decided to do push-ups on the stage, but she didn’t even go nipples to the floor. At least they were boy push-ups.

America, you got some ‘splaining to do. Ryno just told Kris that he’s safe. His wife is very happy right now, but she’s not going to be very happy if he wins this thing. I’m surprised the panties aren’t being thrown on the stage right now.

Daughtry is performing next and I think I only know that one song that they used to close out Idol a couple of years ago. I’m not even sure what else they sing. They’re prepping their second album that’s due out in July.

Chris says he hopes that it performs better than their last album which went 5x platinum. You have a better chance at going back in time, getting in a time machine, and beating Taylor Hicks for American Idol bruh.

I think the album will do very well, but no one goes 5x platinum anymore.

Ryno just sent Adam back to safety so it’s between Allison and Danny.

It’s officially a stag party. Allison goes home. Carrie Underwood has to sing her home sweet home.

I’m officially heartbroken. She was my favorite.
