  • New Music In Stores & Online 9/30/08: Robin Thicke, Ben Folds, T.I. & More!

Talk about ending with a bang. This last day of September 2008 (which, if I’m not mistaken, is also the last day for Grammy eligibility for next year’s ceremony) brings out some big guns (I just realized I made a bunch of firearm references in a column that strongly features an artist who just got sentenced to jail for firearms possession… I swear it was unintentional). Nevertheless, there’s something for just about everyone in stores this week. Here’s what you have to look forward to :

Robin Thicke “Something Else” : You know, a lot of folks like to say “I loved (name artist) when no one else liked them”. Robin Thicke is one of those artists I can say that about. The blue-eyed soul singer broke through two years back with his second album, “The Evolution of Robin Thicke”. Although he had to tone down his sound a little bit to get a hit, it was a pretty solid album. His third album, “Something Else” hits stores today and promises yet another collection of uptempo soul thumpers (like the first single “Magic”) and romantic ballads. Not bad for the son of Jason Seaver.

  • New Music In Stores & Online: 9/23/08: Kings of Leon, Pussycat Dolls, TV on the Radio and More!!!

Kings of Leon's new album, "Only by the Night"

This week’s lineup of releases includes a couple of bands right on the verge, a couple of vets returning after lengthy absences, and a couple of bands trying to capitalize on their first hit. Let’s take a look at the line-up.

Kings of Leon “Only By The Night”

I love Kings of Leon. I made that fairly clear in a post a while back. So “Only by the Night”, their fourth album, is highly anticipated by me…and I suppose quite a few other people too, since each album they’ve released has been progressively more buzzworthy than the one before it. The first single, “Sex on Fire” is awesome, so hopefully this’ll be yet another Southern-fried slab of funk/rock/swampy stuff that’s perfect to smoke a bowl to. If these guys and My Morning Jacket go on tour together, how much pot would be consumed at that concert?

  • Nightwood’s “The Bikeriders”: Fresh New Video

A few weeks ago, I introduced you to a Canadian trio called Nightwood. These Canucks (two chicks and a dude) bring back the glory days of Nineties female-fronted alternative rock. A little Breeders, a little Hole, a little Sleater-Kinney with some Liz Phair (pre-sellout) thrown in. Very good stuff.

Well, they’ve just shot and released a brand new video for the song “The Bikeriders”, and it’s quite the titillating clip-it would be perfect for “120 Minutes”-if “120 Minutes” still existed and MTV actually played videos nowadays. Shot in arty black and white, the video features shots of the trio rocking out (watch out for Eric, the drummer’s unruly hair) amid (ooohhhhh) chicks making out and (ahhhhh) gratuitous ass shots.
