  • No Plastic – At This Moment

As I stated in February, I decided to stop buying actual CDs and buy all my music through iTunes. Let me update you on my iTunes journey.

Money Mike and I had the same memory of Billy Vera’s hit song. I remember watching Family Ties and hearing this song and immediately thinking that Billy Vera really wanted his woman back. It was probably the first song that I actually not only heard the lyrics, but felt them. Well, maybe except part where he wonders if his old girl thought he was going to raise his hands to her.

(I remember either watching The Grammys or the American Music Awards from that year and waiting to see Billy Vera and the Beaters perform. My dad and I saw that Bruno and the Heaters were scheduled to come up next and we laughed because we figured they just got the name wrong. Nope, that was Bruce Willis’ band.)

My girlfriend Jessica didn’t know if she’d heard this song before. And then I went into the whole bit about the song being a major part of one of more memorable story lines of Family Ties. Then I went, wait, let me go to iTunes. Digital music folks. Digital music.

If I could just hold you, again.

    The man was hurtin’.

Usher’s latest and newest “grown up” album Here I Stand didn’t necessarily set the world on fire. I guess people wanted to hear more about him sleeping around on Chili. But this is a more mature Usher which means songs about fatherhood, his lack of a father, and marriage. I don’t think there’s any songs about him dissing moms as his manager though. And maybe on his next album he’ll mention hiring her back after the album didn’t sell like hot cakes.

It’s definitely a good next step in his career. Even though his sales didn’t increase (and let’s be serious, Confessions sold a ton and topping that was going to be near impossible in this day and age) it was a strong move in my opinion. He needs to grow with his audience, but at the same time, also continue making new fans. I’m not sure he knocked it out of the park, but it was a solid record.

It may be a bit long winded though. The CD version is 17 tracks long which is already too long. And the iTunes version is 18 tracks, with the cheesy Will Work For Love as the bonus song. Here’s his second video from the album, Moving Mountains.

I only picked up one other thing in May, and that was the comeback single by the boys from the city. The New Kids On The Block comeback has been tracked step by step (ha!) here, with Money Mike and I both contributing. If their comeback was going to be a step back into 1990 pop music, I would’ve called it for what it was. But so far, it’s been a really smart comeback with them growing in sound and choosing songs with good harmonies. I still don’t think Jon Knight or Danny Wood do much other than show up at the studio and wave pom poms, but I think the New Kids are going to surprise some folks. Both singles have been strong and sit right between R&B and pop music, which is necessary in this day and age.

Summertime isn’t a remake of the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince song. No buying new kicks for the basketball court because there are girls there. It’s a song about a girl from their past who they think about in the summertime. It’s hilarious because even my kids enjoy it. And their mom was about 11 years old when the New Kids originally hit. Though my oldest can’t remember their name and keeps calling them “New Kids By The Block”. Oh well.

*It’s a Jonas world, we’re just living in it. If you count the “Camp Rock” soundtrack, the new millennium Hanson now has three albums in the Top 10, including the #1 album, as “A Little Bit Longer” posts the third biggest debut of the year (behind Li’l Wayne and Coldplay).

*In other ankle-biter news, “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta blasts onto the charts at #2 with “Crush”, besting the #3 debut of “AI” winner David Cook’s “Time of My Life”. It’s fairly obvious who the “Idol” folks are putting their money behind, this is by far the earliest a single by an “Idol” contestant has been released following the season’s conclusion. Shades of Season 2, when the promotional muscle was put behind runner-up Clay Aiken and not winner Ruben Studdard.

*Now, how about if for former ankle-biters? Debuting just out of view of the Top 20, at #22, is a revised “Greatest Hits” album by New Kids on the Block. This marks NKOTB’s highest chart position since “No More Games-The Remix Album” grazed the Top 20 in 1991, and also bodes quite well for their new album, “The Block”, which arrives in a couple of short weeks. However, I’m a bit confused as to how three songs can be added to a previously released compilation and it can be allowed to chart on Billboard’s regular album chart, while five new tracks were added to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and it was relegated to the catalog list. Anyone care to explain that one?

*Congrats to Rihanna. Not only does “Disturbia” hang on to the top spot on the pop singles charts, but “Take a Bow” ascends to the #1 position on the R&B singles charts, giving Rihanna such a rare feat (topping two different singles charts with different singles) that I can’t even think of a precedent.

*Another interesting chart fact to note. Each of this week’s Top 7 albums has done time at #1 on the chart, which is almost certainly some kind of record, although it won’t last next week, where Staind is on track to pop in at #2 behind the Jonases.

*Olympic fever has spread to the Billboard charts, as Taylor Swift and Chris Brown both enter in the Top 20 with their respective “Team U.S.A.”-endorsed singles. I’m waiting for Michael Phelps to make a record. Right now, that’s a guaranteed #1.

*Hey, aren’t Ne-Yo’s and Young Jeezy’s albums supposed to be out already?? Both originally had street dates in early August, but it looks like Ne-Yo’s “Year of the Gentleman” has been bumped to mid-August, while I’m not exactly sure when Jeezy’s “The Recession” is supposed to drop. What’s up Def Jam?

Since this week’s charts aren’t exactly filled with fantastic opportunities to embed video, I’ll leave you guys for the day with a song I’ve been listening to a lot lately, and…the perfect song to put in a Sunday morning column. Behold the awesomeness of Lionel Richie’s ‘fro.

  • New Music In Stores & Online: 8/12/08: Jonas Brothers, “American Mall”, NKOTB and More!!!!

It’s another quiet week on the music front…why do I feel like I’ve been doing nothing but repeating myself for the last three or four weeks? At any rate, unlike last week, there’s at least one release guaranteed to do big numbers, and that release is…drumroll please…

The cover of the new album by the Jonas Brothers, entitled \"A Little Bit Longer\".

    1) The Jonas Brothers “A Little Bit Longer”

Honestly? I always got the Jonas Brothers and the Naked Brothers Band confused until the lead singer did a face plant at the American Music Awards last year and jumped right back up like a trouper. The only one of the brothers whose name I even know is Joe Jonas, because, well, how can you forget a name like Joe Jonas? If anyone else my age knows any more information than this about the New Jersey-based teen band, then you either a) have a teenage daughter or b) should be waiting for the feds to come in and seize your computer. Anyhow, this album has gotten surprisingly good reviews from the likes of Blender & Entertainment Weekly, and the brothers recently landed the cover of Rolling Stone. Not bad. Expect this album to lead next week’s chart by quite a large margin.

More new releases after the jump…
