  • Mother…

    Mother…

My mother just spent several days with me…

It’s been awhile since my last post here on Pop Rock Nation. I have been somewhat busy dealing with July. I think July may be my least favorite month of the year. It seems like that’s when I have to deal with the most grief. Last year, I lost my dad in July. In 2007, I lost my grandmother in July. And I’ve had several beloved dogs get terminal diagnoses in July. So I had been waiting with trepidation for July 2015, which I knew would also be the month I’d see my mother again.

Most of the time, I actually get along pretty well with my mother. As family members go, she’s pretty low impact. She doesn’t mind entertaining herself and will be content taking naps or reading books. We still took her around to show her the local sights. We took her out to a few restaurants. In one place we visited, a German lady actually chastised my husband for not forcing my mom to sit outside in the biergarten, where it was supposedly cooler. And while we were cruising around Baden Wurttemberg, checking things out, we listened to a lot of music.

No, my mom isn’t like Andy Summers’ mother in “Mother”. I do sometimes think of her when I hear this, though.

My mom is a lot more tolerant when it comes to musical choices than my dad was. Dad would listen to horrible elevator music and try to sing along, while all the while I was strapped into the backseat wishing I was anywhere else. But Mom tolerates a broad range of tunes, everything from Queen to David Lanz. Some things she likes better than others. Sometimes she’d ask what we were listening to. Other times, I’d hear her hum, which she rarely does because she thinks she can’t sing. Actually, my mom can sing, she just chooses not to. I think of it as sort of the same attitude she has about getting an ATM card or learning how to use the Internet. She can do those things, but figures at this point in her life, why bother?

My mom probably wouldn’t appreciate Mr. T’s take on mothers. But allow me to take this time to remind you to be somebody, or be somebody’s fool.

I am ever grateful that my mother was never insistent that I follow in her footsteps and have a bunch of kids. I always wanted them, but things didn’t work out that way for me. Mom was fine with it.

Yes, this is a Mormon song for kids, but it kinda fits here. I failed to grow up and become a mother. Actually, I’m glad my life doesn’t revolve around cookies and milk.

I may have related more to Jermaine Jackson’s rather maudlin sentiments about about his mother. “Oh Mother” was on his 1984 album Dynamite, which I owned on vinyl.

Awww… he loves his mother. I used to love this song, but as I’ve gotten older, it seems a bit overwrought.

And then there’s Kate Bush’s haunting “Mother Stands for Comfort”, which was not really true in my case. My mom is a great lady, but she’s not very warm and fuzzy. I like the song anyway, cuz Kate Bush is awesome.

My mother is not all that comforting… but she can be fun when she’s in a good mood.

We sent my mom back to the States yesterday. Her trip involved stops in Munich, Reykjavik, Dulles, and finally RDU, where my sister planned to pick her up and take her to Chapel Hill for a short visit before Mom goes home to Virginia. I’m proud to say our visit was relatively drama free. This July has not sucked as much as last year’s July. In eight days, August will be upon us and I can go back to dreading July.

  • The Sensual World… 25 years old!

The Sensual World… 25 years old!

Happy birthday to one of Kate Bush’s best albums. The Sensual World is now 25 years old.

In October 1989, I was a senior in high school and just starting to get to know Kate Bush’s music. I remember very well when her album, The Sensual World was released. As a budding admirer of her work, I wanted to have it. For Christmas that year, my then boyfriend, Paul, bought me the album on cassette. I listened to it all the time and bought more of Kate Bush’s music, until I had all of her albums and most of the EPs and imports. The Sensual World remains a favorite. I have since replaced the cassette with something more permanent so I can keep listening to this album for another 25 years.

The title track of The Sensual World, immortalized in an official video. This song’s raw sensuality immediately captured my attention. For many years, it was my favorite on this album.

I loved every song on that album, especially the ones that featured backing vocals by the amazing Trio Bulgarka, three Bulgarian women whose harmonies sound almost primal. They offered an amazing texture to Kate Bush’s sophisticated lyrics and fascinating melodies. You can hear their wild voices on several songs on The Sensual World. In 1996, I visited Bulgaria and ended up buying a cassette by Trio Bulgarka, which exposed me to more of their incredible sound. I have Kate Bush to thank for expanding my musical world.

“Deeper Understanding” is an incredible song, especially as Bush sings about treating her computer like a friend. I didn’t own a computer in 1989, but in 2014, my computer is my best friend. Trio Bulgarka sings on the chorus.

Another popular song from The Sensual World is “Love and Anger”. It was not one of my favorites when I first heard it, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to really appreciate the lyrics and the song’s amazing energy.

Love and Anger is a genius song featuring David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on guitar.

I was more partial to the very moving song, “Never Be Mine”, which no doubt appealed to my moody teenage sensibilities. This is another song that makes great use of Trio Bulgarka’s amazing sound as the song intensifies with emotion. This is a song made for drama kings and queens… and anyone who just wants to explore the landscape of their feelings.

Fan created video of “Never Be Mine”.

But perhaps the best known and most loved song from The Sensual World is Kate Bush’s masterpiece, “This Woman’s Work”. There is something unspeakably gorgeous and holy about this song. Sadly, it was used in a scene on 7th Heaven when a character gave birth. The scene was supposed to be reverent and holy, showing the miracle of childbirth. But if you listen to this song and focus on the lyrics, it’s not a happy song. It’s a song about grief.

This song is often used in scenes about childbirth, but to me it’s a very sad song about loss and trying to be strong when strength eludes you.

As I sit here on a rainy Friday morning and listen to The Sensual World 25 years after it was released, I am amazed by how timeless it is. I have loved most of Kate Bush’s work following The Sensual World, particularly Aerial, which she released to much fanfare in 2005. This album still ranks among her best in my view. There’s not a weak song on it. Listening to The Sensual World makes me think and gives me hope and faith. It also makes me miss the days when popular music was more authentic.

Kate Bush announces London gigs 35 years after her only tour!

Could it be true? Will fans finally get to see Kate Bush perform live again?

I have been a Kate Bush fan since the early 1980s, when my older sister bought her 1982 album, The Dreaming, and played it for me. It took another seven or eight years before I finally started buying her albums myself. I was enchanted by her otherworldly singing and unusual musical arrangements. Kate Bush’s music is not for everyone, but I have loved most of it for a good portion of my life. I would have loved to have seen her perform live when I was younger. Unfortunately, Kate Bush hasn’t been on tour since 1979, when she famously played at Hammersmith Odeon. That was her one and only tour and it left many of her fans pining for more.

Kate Bush sings “Wuthering Heights” and proves that she can dance and act.

The Red Dress version of “Wuthering Heights”.

I don’t know what has kept Kate from the stage for all these years. She’s clearly very talented at everything that makes someone a great live performer. While she has been somewhat reclusive in recent years, she hasn’t completely disappeared. In 2011, she released 50 Words for Snow, which included some innovative new songs. It was her first album since 2005’s awesome Aerial, which is probably one of my favorite albums by her.

Kate Bush’s very moving song, “This Woman’s Work”.

Mesmerizing duet with Peter Gabriel, “Don’t Give Up”.

Kate Bush’s Before the Dawn show will be at London’s Eventim Apollo in August and September 2014. Tickets for the fifteen shows go on sale at 9:30am GMT on Friday, March 28th. Patrons are limited to four tickets per booking and must show photo identification to the booker upon arrival at the venue the night of the show. I wish I could be among the lucky people who will get to see Kate Bush perform live again after 35 years. Those who attend her concerts are definitely in for a treat.

Cool version of Kate Bush singing “Running Up That Hill” with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

“The Sensual World” is one of many favorite songs by Kate Bush. There’s something so seductive about this song.

I’m sure someone will make a concert DVD of this show, which I’m certain to get my hot little hands on. For now, I can only be green with envy that those who are lucky enough to live in the United Kingdom will get the chance to see this rare event.

One more for good measure! “Cloudbusting” is one hell of a cool song!

    Have a great weekend, everybody!
