Last night, I found myself some place I never thought I’d be…at a New Kids on the Block concert. Not because I’m ashamed to be a NKOTB fan, mind you, but because I thought the boy band would never get back together. 20 years after the success of their breakthrough album, “Hangin’ Tough”, the still (relatively) young New Kids have reunited and I was fortunate enough to see their first show on American soil in fourteen years.

The crowd was, as expected, about 90% women.  Somewhat surprisingly, the cavernous Izod Center (formerly Continental Airlines Arena, capacity 20K) was about 90% full. While I overheard a bunch of guys in the men’s room complaining about their wives or girlfriends forcing them to come to the show (one guy said that he said he’d come to this show if his wife went to Cruefest), there were also a handful of dudes sporting NKOTB tees, coming out of the closet, so to speak, after (like me) being embarrassed to be a New Kids fan during their high school (or younger) years. Hell, I even spotted one creepy Deadhead guy in the audience. Either he was looking to score some from one of the many single ladies in the audience, or he was mighty disappointed when he realized that the NKOTB aren’t little boys anymore.

  • Clash of the Boy Bands: The New Kids Meet New Edition on “Full Service”

If I’m fanatic about New Kids on the Block, I might be even more fanatic about New Edition-scary thought, isn’t it?

So when it was announced that the New Kids’ comeback album “The Block” would feature a collaboration with the group that pretty much spawned them, I was pretty damn excited. So, less than a week before “The Block” officially hits stores, the song, “Full Service”, has leaked. The question, now, is has the teen idol summit meeting actually resulted in a great song?

  • Friday Throwback – I’ll Be Your Everything

Who is Tommy Page? I mention the name Tommy Page to anyone and I get nothing but blank stares.

Tommy Page is a product of sappy, early 90s pop music. Page actually opened up for the New Kids On The Block when his debut album was released. After touring with them, they lent a helping hand on his second album, Paintings In My Mind, which spawned his number one single, I’ll Be Your Everything. You can hear the New Kids influence on the song. Jordan Knight is on the hook and he hits one of his ball busting, groin punch falsettos, which kind of overshadows Tommy.

    – Ya, I don’t get the ballet theme either.

    – Sing in your highest voice possible – “I’ll be your friend”.

    – Is Tommy wearing leather trousers or are they Z. Cavaricci’s?

    – And while we’re at it, where’s his bolo tie?

    – Since when is the word “last” pronounced “la-hast”?

    – Yet again I must ask you to sing in your highest voice possible – “I’ll be your friend”.

    – “Just reach for me, I’ll be the one to set you free.”

I do have some bonus Tommy Page coverage for you. If someone does remember Tommy Page when I bring up that name, it’s for this little gig he did below. Tommy Page!!!!!!!!!!
