  • Chart Chat 4/22/09: The Ascension of Hannah Montana

    miley1

It’s a good time to be Miley Cyrus. Not only is she achieving film success with “Hannah Montana”‘s soundtrack, but the movie’s soundtrack rises to #1 in its’ third week on the Billboard charts, scanning over 133,000 copies. This catapults the album past Gold status, with about 554,000 copies sold in four weeks.

The chart’s light with debuts this week, as things relax a bit following the big Easter rush. Diddy’s Day26 settle for a #2 debut with their “Forever in a Day” album, scanning just over 113,000 units. The only other debut in the Top 50 comes from rock band Silversun Pickups, who are new at #7 with 43K.

Most albums on this week’s chart nosedive in sales this week, but there are a select few that buck the trend. Kings of Leon’s American breakthrough, “Only by the Night”, moves up 31-18 on a 4% increase to 20K, while other albums that show staying power include Darius Rucker’s “Learn to Live” (+6%) and 3Oh!3’s “Want” (+10%). Jennifer Hudson’s performance on “American Idol” last week spurs a 36% jump in sales for her eponymous debut, which moves 103-42 on this week’s chart.

On the singles side, the biggest news is a #3 debut for Eminem on Hot Digital Songs with “We Made You”. The Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” and Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” hold the top two positions.

Next week, Rick Ross should lead the charts, with expected high debuts from the likes of Depeche Mode and Asher Roth.

  • First Look: Eminem’s “We Need You”

    eminem

Honestly, Marshall? No, we don’t. Not anymore, anyway.

Mr. Mathers has been sliding down the slippery slope of suck ever since peaking with “The Marshall Mathers LP”, which celebrates its’ 9th birthday in a month or so. Not to say Eminem has lost his gift of gab-he’s just been at a loss for interesting subject matter. The more of a star he became, the less righteous rage he could muster up. This is why his last studio album, “Encore” (which is nearly five years old now), struggled to stay afloat. For every righteously indignant masterpiece like “Mosh”, there were twice as many pee and poo jokes-things that might have been appropriate for Em’s daughter Hailie, but not for the hip-hop fans who’d anointed Slim Shady one of the best emcees of all time.

Those of you that thought a few years off might recharge Eminem’s creative batteries? Sorry, y’all. “We Need You” finds Eminem right where we left him. His flow is still ridiculous, but who told him to keep rhyming in that idiotic Triumph the Insult Comic Dog voice? Who told him that people still care about Jessica Simpson? (surely, he must read Billboard). Just like the first singles from each of his past three LPs (I say that since we don’t know where “Crack a Bottle” will end up), Eminem has gone ultra-pop and has resorted to cheap jokes to grab a hit, and the sad thing is, he still has a ton of fans who will eat this shit up. It’s sad.

  • Not Necessarily The News – 50 Cent, LL Cool J, And DMX

After the Chris Brown and Rihanna situation went down before the Grammys, I decided to stay away from making fun of the music news. That situation was way too real.

But, there’s other stuff to joke about now.

50 Cent Gets Pushed Back Again
The original release date for 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct was in early February. Obviously, that time has passed. And now, 50 Cent is getting pushed back again. The reason? Well, because Dr. Dre’s heavy hitter, Eminem’s album is coming out first.

Right now I’m on the train and the Em choo-choo car goes first.

You have to admit, that’s probably the right move. But let’s hope 50’s album doesn’t “self destruct” before it ever comes out.

    DMX
    DMX
    DMX Loses A Food Fight
Can you feel bad for Earl “DMX” Simmons these days? Highly unlikely. Already serving a 90-day sentence, DMX allegedly threw a tray of food at a detention officer. According to the story, DMX didn’t want to eat his nutra-loaf and decided to try and take another meal that wasn’t his. When called on it, he supposedly threw the tray of food at the officer. It’s possible that this episode can add more time to his stay.

Uncle L Gets Another Shot At TV
And here I thought when it came to television, he’d only be known as Marion Hill in In The House. That show is very memorable, but mostly because the fine Maia Campbell was in it. It looks like Uncle L, the future of the funk, is going to be on NCIS: Legend, which is a spin-off of the show NCIS, which is a show that I’ve never seen. Good for LL because maybe it will keep him away from the mic. Exit 13 was no-kay.

Before I leave you, I can’t believe the kid who did one of the worst renditions of Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror that I’ve ever heard made it to the final 12 of American Idol. Yep, I’ll be back when we get down to the final 12 to break it down.
