  • Her Name Might Be Nicole, But She’s A Pussycat Doll

One of the “it” girls in music over the last few years has been former Eden’s Crush member and current Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger. She was featured everywhere from magazine covers to award shows and seemed to be the next breakout star. After helping Diddy get his groove back with his biggest solo hit in years Come To Me, it seemed like a done deal. With an exotic look, a decent enough voice to make it in music today, and with Pussycat Dolls’ hits in her back pocket, it seemed that the world was ready for Nicole.

But something happened on the way to super stardom. The album, titled Her Name Is Nicole, was finished and singles had been released including Whatever U Like and Baby Love. But both failed to spark the necessary fire that Interscope and Scherzinger wanted and the album was delayed.

On Nicole’s website, she posted in her blog on February 12, 2008 that she’s grateful the album was pushed back.

I know you have all been waiting patiently for the release of “Her Name Is Nicole” and I want you to know that I am actually grateful the album has been pushed back. Yes, I REALLY mean that. You see, I want to make sure this album is the best I can make it because I owe that to myself, and to all of you, to release the best music I possibly can. I hope you all continue with me on this journey because it will be worth the wait.

In a sense, it reminded me of Claudette Ortiz who was the lead singer of a group called City High that had a hit song in 2001 called What Would You Do. Much like Scherzinger, Ortiz had breakout star written all over her. Wycle Jean featured her on his single Two Wrongs. She also joined him on a track called Dance Like This, which became more famous because Wyclef and Shakira redid it and called it Hips Don’t Lie. I’m not sure what Ortiz is doing musically today.

As for Scherzinger, she’s back with her Pussycat Dolls sisters with an album scheduled for later in the summer. The first single is When I Grow Up, which you can listen to below.

Will Her Name Is Nicole ever drop? If it does, expect it to be largely different than what she already recorded if history is any indication. Usually these days, artists push back albums because their tracks get leaked and aren’t received well (this happened to Usher’s album that eventually became Confessions). In Scherzinger’s case, actual singles were released and the album was delayed. Instead of waiting for the delayed solo album to drop, she’s moving on as evidenced by the new Pussycat Dolls record. The question is, if PCD doesn’t duplicate their previous success, will people still want to hear Nicole as a solo?

  • Usher Takes A Stand

On May 27, 2008, Usher released his follow up to the very successful Confessions. Though I’ve only listened to the album a few times, I don’t think Here I Stand will have the type of success as his past work. But then again, not too many albums are certified diamond these days. But what Here I Stand does, is give you an idea at how much Usher, who we first saw when he was a very young teenager, has grown up.

Money Mike, the man who runs this fine website, thinks that Usher comes off as uppity and jerk-like in his interviews. I see it a bit differently. I won’t deny that he comes off a little high and mighty, but the thing that stands out to me most is his immaturity. He’s a momma’s boy and because of how he came into this business, didn’t seem to understand how to handle his fame and what came with his fame, especially when it came to the ladies. He was linked with several women, most famously Chili from TLC, and every relationship seemingly ended negatively.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, some things came to light, at least to me. This guy has been in the game so long, and has a few mentors who he was with when he was very impressionable. One of them is Mr. Sean John himself, more famously known as Diddy.

“It was terror,” recalls Usher. Indeed, even keeping up with the omnipresent party that Diddy is today would send the sturdiest of us to an early grave – but back in the ’90s? It was an entirely different story. “I was exposed to the lifestyle of a young, fly A&R who was the man in New York. He took me to clubs. I was around women. It was like swagger camp. I said, So this is what I do when I finally make it…. But you have to be very careful about what you allow your kids to be around or see. I’m a product of the environment.”

Usher doesn’t necessarily blame the situation for his relationship issues, but he doesn’t hesitate to insinuate that his environment definitely added to possible problems. I don’t know about you, but if I was running the city with Diddy as a teenager, my view on real life would be skewed too. Hell, if I was running with Diddy now, I might implode.

Now 29, Usher has grown up a bit. Married and with baby Ush by his side, the new album grows up with him. It’s not going to be the type of album that has hit after hit after hit. Confessions had great buzz with first single Yeah! automatically becoming everyone’s favorite party hit, even before the album came out. Love In The Club is a really good single, but it doesn’t set you up for what the rest of the album is about. You’ll hear a matured Usher, talking about love, relationships, and giving his child what his father didn’t give him. And while I haven’t given it enough of a listen to really give an informed opinion about the entire body of work, I respect that as a singer, his material is growing with him.

Will this album be the hit the last one was? Not likely. But he gets that his music should grow with his life. It looks like the momma’s boy has become a man.

*Off the chart, the big news is the loud thudding sound made by “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson’s compilation album “Music Club Vol. 1”, which debuted at #50 last week and drops to #137 this week. This development raises two questions: 1) in light of “Idol” finalists with far more impressive sales pedigrees getting relieved of their contracts, is The Dawg going to receive the same unceremonious boot? and 2) Why do I feel like the *other* Randy Jackson (brother of Michael and Janet) could put out an album right now and have a similar or better response at the cash registers?
*Brit newcomer Leona Lewis enjoys an impressive move to #1 on the charts this week, but her happiness will be short lived, as Mariah Carey (at #15) will see a sales lift next week due to “Touch My Body”‘s iTunes availability. If Mariah makes it to the top, it will be her 18th chart topper, jumping her ahead of Elvis Presley into 2nd place as the artist with the most #1 singles in history (The Beatles are #1, with 20)
*Gnarls Barkley enjoy an impressive #18 debut with only about a half-week of sales, as their sophomore effort, “The Odd Couple” didn’t arrive in record stores until Thursday or Friday, two to three days after the tracking week began.
*Chris Brown manages the impressive feet of scoring three songs in the Top 10 this week, a feat that was most recently accomplished by T-Pain last year. Mr. Pain is no slouch himself, with two songs in the Top 10, including one shared with Mr. Brown
*Lil’ Mama, believe it or not, is only the fourth female rapper to score two Top Ten hits on the pop chart. The others? Li’l Kim, Da Brat and Missy Elliott.
*Nice week to be Diddy, eh? Not only was the L.A. Times story that implicated him in Tupac’s 1994 shooting revealed to be a fraud, but his proteges Danity Kane enter the charts at #1 for the second time, making them the only female act to debut at #1 with two consecutive albums. Next week, Puff’s boy-band counterpart, Day26, will ALSO enter the charts at the top with their debut. Expect to see lots of Puffy smiling with those little-ass teeth!!
