    Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Just popping in to Pop Rock Nation to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!

    There was a time when I routinely wore black on Valentine’s Day, but now that I have a loving husband who makes me eggs benedict and buys me chocolate and roses, I don’t mind it so much anymore. Last year at this time, I got into a ridiculous online spat with some woman from Canada who was upset because I posted this photo on Facebook.

    She said I had shamed all the single people on Valentine’s Day, who were lonely on the big made up greeting card “holiday”. In the interest of not hurting peoples’ feelings on Valentine’s Day, I didn’t share that photo on Facebook this year. However, I did share this one.

    In all seriousness, over the years, there have been some nice songs about Valentine’s Day. One that immediately pops into my head was done by James Taylor in 1988.


    This song really shows off James Taylor’s love of word play. Now that I have someone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, I appreciate it more.

    But those who don’t have a Valentine might relate more to this classic James Taylor song…

    As much as I love James Taylor’s original version of this song, I gotta give props to Lizz Wright and David Sanborn for this smoking hot and sensual cover. I also like an updated version James Taylor sang with the late Michael Brecker on sax. Check this out.


    I love this jazzy makeover with JT singing his old hit and joined by Brecker’s soulful sax.

    I hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine’s Day, or if you’re not enjoying V.D. this year, I hope your weekend is at least fun. Here in Texas, the weather is fine, but I know many of my friends are snowed in right now. That could lead to some serious Valentine’s lovemaking! Since my husband is home today, I’m going to cut today’s post a bit short so I can enjoy my V.D. too.

  • New Release of the Week 1/26/10: Corinne Bailey Rae

    Corinne Bailey Rae’s self-titled 2006 debut was one of the surprise successes of 2006. Her amalgam of soul and acoustic pop won her 2 million fans here in the states and won her a ton of Grammy nominations, and she did it without the benefit of a huge radio hit.

    It’s pretty fair to say that a follow-up would have taken less than four years to complete, had Corinne’s husband not died from a drug overdose back in 2008. That event shook Corinne to her core, and she went through a period where she (justifiably) did not feel like writing songs and making music.

    Finally, two years after her husband’s tragic death and nearly four years since her debut album’s release, Corinne is back with her sophomore work, “The Sea”. Advance reviews have largely been positive, and I’m looking forward to hearing the album. You can check out my pal Jeff Giles’ review of “The Sea” over at Eat Sleep Drink Music right here.

    Also out this week:

    *Lady Antebellum “Need You Now”: This co-ed trio is the hottest thing in country music right now not named Taylor Swift. The title track has already been a huge country hit and it’s made its’ way into the Top Ten on the pop charts as well. Expect “Need You Now” to open at the top of the Billboard charts next week with huge numbers.

    *Michael Jackson “This is It” DVD: Those of you who didn’t get the chance to catch “This is It” in theaters really missed out. Despite the drug addict rumors, Michael was on top of his game as he was rehearsing for his run of shows in England. He also comes across as more human than anyone who’s followed him in the past two decades would think. Seriously-even if you’re not a super-fan, you’ll be impressed by the movie. There’s not a ton of bonus footage on the DVD, which kinda sucks.

    *Barry Manilow “The Greatest Love Songs of All Time”: Is it me, or has Manilow done about 30,000 different versions of covers albums? Isn’t this guy a songwriter? Can’t he write his own material?

    *David Sanborn “Only Everything”: One of the few horn players I can think of that I can immediately recognize when I can hear him-the others are Miles Davis and (sigh…) Kenny G, Sanborn is a legendary figure in jazz as well as pop, having played with everyone from David Bowie to Lenny Kravitz. I also have a soft spot for the guy because I was at one point co-workers (and friends) with his son Jonathan and he was surprisingly cool for a celebrity’s kid. His daddy raised him right. Anyway, the elder Sanborn’s new album features guest appearances from James Taylor and Joss Stone, among others.

  • New Music In Stores & Online: 8/12/08: Jonas Brothers, “American Mall”, NKOTB and More!!!!

    It’s another quiet week on the music front…why do I feel like I’ve been doing nothing but repeating myself for the last three or four weeks? At any rate, unlike last week, there’s at least one release guaranteed to do big numbers, and that release is…drumroll please…

    Honestly? I always got the Jonas Brothers and the Naked Brothers Band confused until the lead singer did a face plant at the American Music Awards last year and jumped right back up like a trouper. The only one of the brothers whose name I even know is Joe Jonas, because, well, how can you forget a name like Joe Jonas? If anyone else my age knows any more information than this about the New Jersey-based teen band, then you either a) have a teenage daughter or b) should be waiting for the feds to come in and seize your computer. Anyhow, this album has gotten surprisingly good reviews from the likes of Blender & Entertainment Weekly, and the brothers recently landed the cover of Rolling Stone. Not bad. Expect this album to lead next week’s chart by quite a large margin.
