  • Chart Chat 10/22/09: Buble-Licious!!

That may have been the worst pun I’ve ever made in my life.

So, as the headline suggests, Canuck crooner Michael Buble holds at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart with “Crazy Love”. The album sells 203,000 units in it’s first full week of release. It debuted early after his label pushed the release date up 4 days. I remember reading somewhere (of course, I can’t find the article now) that said that he and Norah Jones are the only artists in history to debut at #1 without having had a single Top 40 hit. Interesting.

Three albums debut in the Top 20 this week. The “New Moon” soundtrack enters at #2 with 115,000 copies sold. Of course, “New Moon” is the latest edition in the “Twilight” series. The “Twilight” soundtrack was a smash, selling over 2 million copies. It will be interesting to see if this soundtrack does as well. All indications point to it, considering the sales numbers are this high with a month till release. The other debuts in the Top 20 come from alt-rock legends The Flaming Lips (at #8) and R&B singer Mario (#9).

The Black Eyed Peas return to the Top Ten with a flourish. “The E.N.D.” jumps from #23 to #6 this week, thanks to rapidly increasing airplay for their latest single, “Meet Me Halfway”, which is #9 on the singles charts this week. Another act with a hot single to watch out for is Owl City. Thanks to the success of the single “Fireflies” (which my buddy Paul turned me on to, thanks!!), the one-man band project jumps from #32 to #20 this week.

It’s beginning to look a LOT like Christmas! Holiday albums from Bob Dylan (#23) and David Archuleta (#30) debut on this week’s chart.

On the singles side of things, Britney Spears drops out of the top spot after a single week with “3”. The racy single slips to #5 in its second week on the charts. Jay Sean’s “Down” advances one spot to reclaim the #1 spot after yielding to Britney last week.  Aside from the previously mentioned Black Eyed Peas jump, the other major news comes from John Mayer, who scores his highest Hot 100 debut ever with “Who Says”. John’s gonna have to count on a lot of downloads if he wants this to hit the top-radio’s not gonna be so crazy about a song whose first line is “who says I can’t get stoned?” Somewhat strangely, although many people think of John as a radio darling, he has never had a Top 10 hit. “Say” peaked at #12, “No Such Thing” stalled at #13 and “Waiting for the World to Change” ran out of gas at #14.

Below the Top 20, Chris Brown blasts 52-27 with his latest single, “I Can Transform Ya”.  We forgive easy, don’t we?

Next week, the “New Moon” soundtrack will do battle with Tim McGraw for the chart crown. We’ll see who wins in our next Chart Chat column.

Oh, here’s this week’s Top 20 albums. Scroll down to the end to see a special treat.

    2) Various Artists “Twilight-New Moon Soundtrack”

In honor of the Black Eyed Peas’ new single, let’s retreat back to the year 1987, when another singer scored a huge hit with a song called “Meet Me Halfway”. That singer? Mr. Kenny Loggins.

  • Kanye West: Why All the Hate?

Randomly perusing Facebook while eating lunch yesterday, my eye caught a status update by a…well, not exactly a friend, more of a friend of a friend. Either way, it sort of threw me for a loop. It said:

“Whoever started the RIP Kanye West hoax, thanks a lot for getting my hopes up. Jerk.”

    Um…seriously?

Look, I can TOTALLY understand why people don’t like Kanye West as a personality. He’s arrogant, emotional and blustery (traits that would be nowhere as big a deal if he were an athlete, don’t you think?). He has ultimate confidence in himself and his art. He thinks he’s the best, and wants to be recognized as such. Those are actually some of the reasons I LIKE the man. Just like me to be contrary. I can also understand if you’re not a fan of his music. Hip-hop isn’t for everyone, and the person in question is an open disliker of hip-hop (except for, he says, The Beastie Boys…something that makes me wonder if he really hates hip-hop, or if he hates what he perceives as hip-hop culture. It also sounds…wait for it…racist to my ears. But that’s another story).

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s all good. No one has to like every genre of music or every artist. I don’t like The Black Eyed Peas. Only makes me wish that not as many people bought their records. I’m not anticipating the day will.i.am gets run over by a pickup truck, you know what I’m saying?

Those of you who read this blog regularly are well aware that I am a Kanye West fan. I don’t condone everything the guy does, and I actually think some of his extra-curricular activities are annoying and they detract from the genius. The Taylor Swift thing? I mean, it was obviously bad manners, although I don’t know how self-aggrandizing it was-after all, he wasn’t complaining that HIS video should have won the Best Female Video award. On top of all that, as I’ve mentioned before, I think it’s fairly obvious that the event was at least partially staged. But the reaction, both in the media and on the internet, has been astounding. Did anyone make this much of a ruckus when ODB stormed the stage when Shawn Colvin won at the Grammy Awards? What about when 50 Cent stormed the stage after Evanescence won Best New Artist at the Grammys a couple years later? (Damn, is it only rappers who do this shit?) If I remember correctly, most people kinda laughed it off and went about their business. As they should’ve done with this incident. It’s a MUSIC AWARDS SHOW, for crying out loud. When I initially made my comment about the whole mess on Twitter, some idiot actually de-friended me on both Twitter AND Facebook for suggesting that it was a hoax! Um, I think some of us might be taking things a little TOO seriously.

(and would the reaction have been the same if Taylor Swift had been a black artist? Or another rapper? Or a guy (or a band)?…Just saying).

Ultimately, I’m of the school that all publicity is good publicity, and Kanye’s not going to experience any long-term ill effects from MTV’s his stunt. His fans really aren’t the type of people who care about Taylor Swift OR the MTV Awards, and I would imagine that most, like me, are used to Kanye’s actions by now.

However, wishing someone dead? Someone who’s not a murderer or a terrorist or a rapist? Whose only “crime” is making music you don’t like and being somewhat obnoxious? Don’t you think that’s taking things a little too far?

  • First Look: Adam Lambert Goes Apocalyptic

A week or so ago, GG talked about Adam Lambert’s new single, “Time for Miracles”. I’m not quite sure what to make of the song, honestly. I certainly respect Adam’s singing voice. The man can sing his ass off. And I suppose this type of big, blustery single is a good fit for him. However, I dunno. Just not my cup of tea. I like Kris Allen’s single better (which isn’t saying a whole lot, because I really didn’t care for his song either).

Anyway, the video for “Time for Miracles” has leaked. The song is the theme for the upcoming disaster movie “2012”, and the video serves as a commercial of sorts for the movie. Lots of shit blowing up, buildings falling (is it me, or is anyone else disturbed when anyone makes a disaster flick post 9/11?). It’s quite obviously a big-budget deal. And it fits the song. Totally bombastic.

Doesn’t mean I like the song any better though. It actually reminded me of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, which could mean some serious Grammy/Oscar action within the next 18 months or so. This will probably be a huge hit…

…unlike Allen’s song, which is languishing in the lower reaches of the Billboard Top 100 singles chart. This song and video will get an extra boost from the fact that it will be played before showings of Michael Jackson’s “This is It” movie. Looks to me like the folks at 19 Entertainment are putting their money and muscle on Lambert, much like they did with Chris Daughtry a couple years ago, leaving poor Taylor Hicks to flounder (relatively speaking).

Anyway, click on the link below to check out the video. Can’t you imagine Celine Dion singing this song?
