  • Willie’s Weed A No-Go In Louisiana

    Willie Nelson on stage
Legend Willie Nelson and four members of his entourage were busted this week in Lafayette, Louisiana for a relatively small amount of mushrooms and a pound-and-a-half of pot. While the singer’s popularity shows little signs of abating, one has to wonder how much more of Willie we’ll see.

The singer is now 73. The IRS is paid. He continues to do his good, charitable works for the American farmer and others. Heck, he’s even been on King of the Hill. Really, what is left?

So if you see a smoky tour bus pull up in your neck of the woods, you might want to get tickets to the show. Ain’t no telling how much more Willie is going to put up with before he goes off and sits by the side of a pool somewhere.

Figuring that Jesus Take The Wheel was the thrust of American Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts release, I gave it a cursory listen when it debuted. Mistake. Underwood channels Gretchen Wilson, Loretta Lynn and some other good old girls. There’s some filler here, but there are some winners too.

  • Glitter Gone From NFL

Forbes is reporting that Gary Glitter’s anthemic Rock and Roll, Part II won’t be played at games this year. Unless you’ve been under a rock somewhere, you’ve heard that the rocker who owes his royalties to NFL teams throughout the U.S., has been twice convicted of crimes related to child pornography. The album and single were never massive hits and Part II remains the only Top 10 song of Glitter’s career.

Sometimes, like Dennis Miller said, you have to cull the herd. While recognizing that Glitter has an illness, increasing the popularity of his music doesn’t help. While the NFL may take some criticism for this move, I think they did the righ thing.

My wife just came home from a day of garage sales and antiques with a boxed set of Motown LPs. The CD goes away today.

  • Welcome Back, Jay-Z. When Did You Leave?

    He’s been on the Grammys.

    He’s performed with Beyonce.

He may have done that in more ways than one.

He runs a music company — a good one.

He even owns part of a basketball team.

F0rget what Biggie claimed. Jay-Z is Brooklyn’s Finest, or one of ’em anyway. And now he’s back from his “retirement”? That is what Entertainment Weekly is reporting and being picked up all over the world.

Shawn Carter is gonna make more music. Since he was born in the Nixon administration, it’s not as if he is too old to do that. So if The Black Album wasn’t really his final album, the crossover smash sold out of stores and generated three Top 40 hits. The stars out for that album — Rick Rubin, Kanye, John Legend and more — are no doubt available to him again. Look for young Beyonce to play a greater role as well.

It’s been three years. Time to stop playing with spreadsheets and start playing with mixing boards.

I’m still liking Panic! At The Disco. I Write Sins Not Tragedies is as fresh a sound as Green Day’s American Idiot showed up two years ago.
