    Analysis:

    Theory Of A Deadman regains the #1 spot with their sentimental rocker about a relationship gone sour.  The song is beginning to grow on me….  AC/DC stays put at #3, I’m still waiting for them to hit the top spot which I think is going to happen in the next two weeks….  Use Me by Hinder might make my Top #5 singles of the year, the song really kicks ass…  Did anybody think Three Doors Down would be still be relevant in today’s music scene? almost ten years after their debut?  They enter the Top 10 with their second single (Train) from their self-titled new album… I’m curious to see if Tesla can make the Top 10 with their new single, I Wanna Live, which is getting a lot of local radio play.  They haven’t had a Top 10 Mainstream Rock hit since 1994’s Mama’s Fool which peaked at #5…  Not much else movement this week.

    Analysis:

    The Offspring grab the #1 spot with their new single which is their third ever #1, and their first since Hit That topped the Modern Rock charts in 2004.  Personally, I think the song is pretty bland, and it hasn’t gotten much exposure on my local rock radio.  Maybe I’m listening at the wrong times…  Can Weezer get their new song to the top spot and make it two #1 Modern Rock singles from the new album?  Maybe, maybe not!…Rise Against was the biggest mover up three spots to #5 with their new single.  I have to do my homework on these guys as I’m not too aware of what they are all about.

    *Well, I’ll be damned. Not only did “Mamma Mia” do mighty fine business at the box office, but the soundtrack nearly doubled in sales this week (and promises to do the same next week). Considering this, as well as the fact that “Hairspray” was the soundtrack hit of last summer, is it safe to say that gay men comprise a quite large segment of the music buying audience?

    *The Jonas Brothers (who are in the Top 20 twice this week) are on the cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone. Don’t you think Jann Wenner would have caught more than a little shit if he’d put Hanson on the cover of RS 10 years ago or put the New Kids on the cover 20 years ago?

    *I knew I could work an NKOTB reference into this column somewhere.

    *Wasn’t Jesse McCartney trying to be Ryan Cabrera five years ago? Why is he trying to be Ne-Yo these days?

    *Never thought a Canadian rapper would make his way into the Top 10 in America? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Kardinal Offishall. I’ll spare you the video. You can thank me later.

    *It should be fairly obvious, and I think I’ve mentioned it before, but isn’t it so easy to look at the top selling albums, then look at the most popular singles and realize who’s buying what these days?

    *For a band that gets collectively rimmed by the rock press as much as The Hold Steady does, you’ve gotta imagine that the #30 start for their new album “Stay Positive” has gotta be something of a disappointment. When Randy Travis sells more records than you in his first week twenty years after his peak, you’ve got to be just a little embarrassed, no?

    *This week’s “Catch a Falling Star” award is shared by Alanis Morissette and Weezer. Alanis’s record sales have been dropping ever since everyone and their momma bought “Jagged Little Pill” in ’95-’96. “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” sold 3 or 4 million off of fumes, the next album debuted at #1 and promptly sank like a stone, and outside of a brief resurgence due to the re-recorded version of “Pill”, Alanis has slowly sunk into marginalia. Her latest album, “Flavors of Entanglement”, shows some sign of life this week, bouncing up 18 spots to #40 this week, but for an album to be out of the Top 40 within a month and a half when one of your older albums spent twice that amount of time at #1 has got to sting a little bit. As for Rivers Cuomo and his boys, it seems like word of mouth is what sunk Weezer’s “Red Album”. With the general consensus being that this is by far the worst album of the band’s career, the album stands at #42 after 7 weeks. Ah, well. Rivers always has that degree to fall back on.

    *Finally, “The Dark Knight” soundtrack debuts at #20 this week. It’s not near as successful as the soundtracks to some of the earlier “Batman” movies, but charts extremely well for an album of instrumental score music. And it’s a perfect way to end this week’s Chart Chat with…”Batdance”!! YAY!!!

    Fuck. I forgot. Prince hates the internets these days. Oh well.I tried, y’all. Till next week.

  • New Music In Stores & Online: 6-3-08: Weezer, Ashanti, Jewel and more!!

    While there aren’t any blockbusters arriving in stores this week, there’s a pretty healthy bunch of new music. Here are some titles you might want to look out for.

    *Various Artists “Now That’s What I Call Music 28”: These compilations have been money in the bank for about a decade, but sales have slipped as the general public has realized that they can download the songs they like individually. Anyhow, this edition is significantly less R&B/hip-hop-centric than it has been in the past, with the likes of John Mayer, Fall Out Boy and Colbie Caillat joining recent hits by Lil’ Wayne, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown.

    *Ashanti “The Declaration”: Remember about six years ago, when Ashanti was the hottest thing going? Well, this is her fourth album, and I’m not convinced that anyone really cares. She’s pretty much ditched Irv Gotti, Ja Rule and the Murder Inc. camp on this release, which features guest appearances from Babyface and Robin Thicke. “The Way That I Love You” has not made a lot of noise on the pop front, but it was a Top 5 R&B hit and definitely has one of the more interesting videos of the year so far.

    *Jewel “Perfectly Clear”: A week or so ago, I posted Jessica Simpson’s new single, which found the pop vocalist heading into country territory. Jewel is another female singer who’s decided to do a genre switch (at least for now), and it probably goes without saying that Jewel’s adaptation of country flavors is probably a lot less forced (and a lot less blatantly commercial) than Jessica’s is. At any rate Jewel has never particularly interested me beyond a couple of singles, so I’ll skip this one. It is her first release on a new label, though, which usually means that a greatest hits compilation from her former label probably isn’t too far away. Now that, I’ll pick up.

    *Weezer “Weezer (Red Album)”: If you want short, hooky pop/rock songs, Weezer and The Foo Fighters are your best courses of action. Both bands have outlasted their contemporaries simply by doing what they do best. You know what a Weezer album is going to sound like, for the most part…or maybe you don’t! This, their fifth album, finds the band members switching up instruments on occasion and also finds band members not named Rivers Cuomo singing lead. First single “Pork & Beans” is already huge. Expect the rest of the album to follow suit. Also, keep in mind that this album wasn’t even supposed to exist, as the band reportedly split up after the release of 2005’s “Make Believe”.

    Also: Indie-rock darlings The Ting Tings, who recently scored the #1 single and album in the U.K. (as well as a coveted iPod commercial here in the States) release their debut “We Started Nothing” today…metal favorites Disturbed are back with “Indestructible” (alas, it features no Genesis covers)…soul siren (and daughter of the legendary Donny) Lalah Hathaway straddles the line between smooth soul and smooth jazz on “Self Portrait”, her new effort…meanwhile, two popular frontmen do the solo thing: Gavin Rossdale (formerly of Bush, currently Mr. Gwen Stefani) tries to re-establish his music career with “Wanderlust”, while Bret Michaels of Poison tries to capitalize on his reality show success with “Rock My World”.
