  • Jay-Z Runs New York And Rolls With U2

    Jay-Z was all over the place last week. From performing at the parade to celebrate the New York Yankees’ 27th World Series win to rockin’ out with U2 in Berlin at the MTV Europe Music awards, the mayor of New York (as called by Bono) was everywhere.

    In Berlin, after performing earlier in the show, he joined U2 to close out the night as they were performing Sunday Bloody Sunday.

    On his Twitter page, Talib Kweil called it the most progressive Jay verse ever.

    In other quick Jay-Z news, he and Alicia Keys recorded Empire State Of Mind Part 2 for Alicia Keys’ new December album, The Element of Freedom.

  • The Sunday Seven 11/9/08: That’s Where I Want To Be!!

    My intros suck…I’m still looking for guests for this column. Don’t be shy! I want to know what’s in your music collections! Anyhow, let’s continue moving through mine.

    1) Not for You by Pearl Jam: The Vitalogy album kinda marked the beginning of the “OK, Eddie Vedder, you’re trying a little too hard to be aloof and counter-culture” period. I remember seeing him on the Grammys one year after he won the award and he said something like (I’m paraphrasing, forgive me) “We don’t understand the meaning of shows like this” or some crap like that, and I was like “then WHY are you here accepting an award?”. Sheesh. Anyway, great song, pretty good album. I love Vedder when he screams. He’s actually got a very soulful voice. I miss my copy of Vitalogy on vinyl.

    I say Eddie, Dave Grohl and Chris Cornell challenge one another to a scream-off.

  • The Sunday Seven: Owe Me Back Like You Owe Your Tax

    This week’s seven is being brought to you during commercial breaks for the Emmy Awards, which is surprisingly funny and entertaining this year.

    Ah, and if anyone would like to do a Guest Sunday Seven, please let me know. Let’s get busy.

    Track 1: “The Blast (live)” by Talib Kweli & Erykah Badu

    This is a live version of Kweli’s hit taken from “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party”, a show I actually had an invite to and skipped. Because it was raining and I’m a lazy bastard. I regretted going for a while, and then while sitting in the movie theater watching the movie version, I realized I had a much better view of what was going on at the show than I would have had I actually gone to the show.

    This version has more energy than Kweli’s studio version on “Reflection Eternal”, and Badu is a nice touch on the chorus. He’s a little husky here, but he sounds energetic, something he didn’t when I saw him in an underwhelming performance opening for the Beastie Boys three years ago.
