  • Infatueighties #58: Juicy Fruit

mtumeAt this point, most people would hear the first few bars of Juicy Fruit and think “oh! Biggie!!”. However, this funk groove by a couple of production vets had already been a classic for over a decade before a certain Brooklyn rapper (and his shiny-suited benefactor) flipped it into a hip-hop classic.

James Mtume & Reggie Lucas were already a hot production duo by the time they decided to start recording as a band. They’d produced records by a slew of female artists, including Roberta Flack (The Closer I Get To You), Stephanie Mills (Never Knew Love Like This Before), Phyllis Hyman (You Know How To Love Me), and this chick singer from Detroit named Madonna (Lucky Star). Recruiting fiery singer Tawatha Agee, Juicy Fruit became their first and biggest hit, narrowly missing the pop Top 40 but spending damn near an entire summer atop the R&B listings.

There are a lot of things that make this song the classic it is: the funky yet sensual arrangement, the cool drum machine beat, the delightfully nasty lyrics (this song rivals Grace Jones’ Pull Up to the Bumper as basically one lengthy double-entendre). It’s classy and sleazy at the same time.

It was Mtume’s finest moment as a group, as the band was defunct a half-decade later. Mtume has gone on to be a popular radio host in the New York City area, while Agee has become an in-demand background vocalist, working extensively with Luther Vandross and touring with Dave Matthews as one of his “Lovely Ladies”. They’ll always be remembered fondly for this 1983 gem. which promises a sticky and sweet bedroom experience.

  • Get Into the Groove: The Ultimate Madonna Mix

She’s the Queen of Pop. She’s (like) a virgin. She’s a dance diva. She’s an Earth mother. She’s Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone Penn Ritchie, and she’s been a musical icon for the past twenty-five years.

Much has been said about Madge’s body of work, not all of it complimentary. Truthfully, although I’m certainly a fan, I’d have to say she peaked early. In my eyes, her first album is still her best. However, each of her albums has at least a couple of strong songs, and, while her latest, Hard Candy, hasn’t exactly been critically or commercially praised, it’s not an altogether bad piece of work (dear Madonna: Justin Timberlake yes, Pharrell Williams no).

If I had 80 minutes to describe the essence of Madonna in a nutshell to a stranger (although, let’s face it, who doesn’t know Madonna?) These are the songs I would go with:

    1) Get Together (from “Confessions on a Dance Floor”, 2005)

The only way I can describe this song is: this is the way it feels inside a club when you’ve completely lost touch with your life and all the everyday crap you go through and just submit yourself to the music. I’m certainly not the clubgoer I was back in the mid-Nineties (actually, I hate clubs nowadays), but this song reminds me of those transcendent moments. It was really the only thing worth keeping on “Confessions on a Dance Floor”.

  • Not Necessarily The News – JT, Madonna, And Brit

    Simon Gives Up The Loot
In an update to what I posted last weekend, Mike’s main man Perez Hilton had a story on his site about the $9 million dollar thank you gift Simon Cowell gave his now ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour, who broke up with him because he didn’t want to get married. Everyone wants to be an American Idol. I want to be a Simon Cowell.

Lionel Wants To Dance On The Ceiling Again
E! Online says that Lionel Richie is working with Ne-Yo and Akon for a track on his new album that’s due out in February. While Lionel should probably act his age, his 2006 song I Call It Love featuring Taj Jackson was actually a pretty good song. Check out the video with daughter Nicole.

Madonna Gets Justin And Britney To Share The Stage, Just Not Together
This is another story from E! Online. Justin and Britney both were guest stars of Madonna’s on her tour which stopped at Dodger Stadium. Brit helped her out with Human Nature while JT was with her for 4 Minutes. But they weren’t on the stage together. Maybe next time.

No To Jermaine But Yes To London?
Billboard.com has this last bit about MJ possibly performing in London at the O2 Arena. Like I said last time, I’ll believe it when it comes out of MJ’s mouth.
