  • 50th Grammy’s: No Coffee

I’ve blogged this show for the past two years and made fun of it’s usual lengthiness, but am going to change my tune. The last few years caused me to drink copious amounts of coffee to get through the shows. I’m only drinking Diet Pepsi Max (and bobbing my head like LL and Busta) and Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry Vanilla style.

Let’s just get this out of the way. Kanye is going to be the sentimental favorite tonight. With his mom’s recent surprise passing, I can’t imagine him not performing Hey Mama tonight and just making the tears run down everyone’s faces.

    • The show opens with Alicia Keys singing a duet with Frank Sinatra. And dude is in black and white.
    • Alicia’s dress is way too tight and reminds me of the dress that Donna Martin wore to the Spring dance that made her look like a mermaid. Her breasts must be suffocating.
    • Carrie Underwood is a really pretty girl, but isn’t the kind of girl who should ever wear hot pants of any kind. She has a bad case of noassatall.
    • Alicia Keys just won the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and accepted the award from Prince. Her heels must’ve been higher because dude would’ve had to jump to kiss her.
    • Morris Day and The Time just came out, but only to act as the intro act to Rihanna. Prince was not in sight, but Rihanna still gave him props by wearing her hair the same way as him.
    • Fantasia was in the crowd and she’s rockin’ a blond bald spot.
    • Amy Winehouse won for Best New Artist so they aren’t screwing her just yet for being a nut job.
    • Say what you want about Kanye, but the dude is an entertainer. And he did Hey Mama justice and his mother proud tonight.

    • There are some people who actually look great in HD, but poor Fergie Ferg isn’t one of them. She should have it in her contract that they can’t do close-ups on her.
    • First the Oscars did it to Dreamgirls and now the Grammy’s. They gave the Compilation Soundtrack award to Beatles Live. I think I would’ve been ok with Hugh Grant winning for Pop! Goes My Heart, but not to some guys in tight trousers dancing to Beatles songs.
    • Beyonce came out in nothing more than a dress with bikini bottoms and she let the thighs loose. Let’s just say that if Jay-Z ever fell asleep on her lap, he may never wake up.
    • Tina Turner came out and sang with Beyonce and save for one moment where she kicked out her knee and I thought she dislocated her knee cap, that old woman can still get it done.
    • Even though Amy Winehouse won the song writer’s award for Best Song, what is more interesting is that I learned that Jay-Z gets a writing credit for Umbrella, all because he was in a verse at the beginning of the song that no one remembers. Dude didn’t even write, “Ella ella aye aye”.
    • Just as I aimed my buddy Mike that if Nas or Kanye West didn’t win, we riot, Kanye West won for Best Rap Album.
    • The Grammy’s tried to play the wrap-up music on Kanye, but he made it stop. That was classic.
    • I thought the only people who knew who Feist was, were the folks who watched VH-1 early in the morning.
    • Alicia Keys and Johnny Mayer work well together. And thankfully, Mayer cut off the Edward Scissorhands hairdo.
    • In introducing Amy Winehouse (who is live via satellite as she couldn’t get her visa in time), Cuba Gooding said, “Ya know what I’m sayin?” I didn’t know the dude had it in him.
    • Either Winehouse is trying to make us think she’s messed up, or she’s really messed up. Which also begs the question, “How can someone sing so well while messed up?”
    • After winning Record Of The Year for Rehab she shouted out her “Blake incarcerated”. Yep, she said it.
    • Why is will.i.am on my TV singing and rapping a collection of past Grammy’s hits? The crowd didn’t know what to do when he was done.
    • Usher and Kanye West would’ve tied if there was an award for Best Sunglasses.
    • In the biggest upset in the last week, Herbie Hancock beat out both Kanye West and Amy Winehouse for Album Of The Year. It was an Eli Manning-esque comeback. Then, when reaching for his thank you cards, they slipped out and fell, only he didn’t know and kept reaching into his pocket. At least Eli didn’t drop the trophy.

The rumored Michael Jackson tie-in for the re-release of Thriller never happened. That made me sad. But at least I didn’t have to drink coffee.

  • 2008 Grammy Nominations: As Usual, Huh?

Some folks view the Grammy Awards as a congratulatory pat on the back for music executives and record industry types, and they’re partially right. However, not all 12,000 members of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences are the Clive Davises of the world. Actually, a good chunk are the artists, songwriters, producers and engineers themselves. However, that’s not to say that even the folks behind the scenes can’t get things wrong sometimes. Here’s a look at some of the gimmes, the “huh?”s and the “WTF”s that today’s nomination announcements brought:
Kanye West led the pack with eight nominations, surprising no one. Actually, up against this year’s Album of the Year field (which features Amy Winehouse, Vince Gill, The Foo Fighters and Herbie Hancock), Grammy practically paved a path for him to walk up and claim his very first Album of the Year prize. His only true competition is…
Winehouse, whose nutty factor makes her a wild card. Will she show up at the ceremony? Will she live to see the ceremony? Will she deliver one of her famously off-kilter performances? Will she impale herself on any award she wins? Will that aforementioned wild card hurt her chances as the one award which should be a landslide for her, Best New Artist?
The Best New Artist nominees also include Canadian hipster fave Feist, MTV-anointed metal band Paramore, neo-soul also-ran Ledisi and country hitmaker Taylor Swift. Conceivably, Swift and Feist could both challenge Winehouse for the award. Although Winehouse would have faced stronger competition from four artists who didn’t even get nominated-soul singer Robin Thicke, American Idol castoff Daughtry (who got nods in several other categories), folk-pop singer Colbie Callait (the most surprising omission) and Amy’s fellow Brit Lily Allen (who inexplicably is in the Best Alternative Music category), despite the fact that Allen’s “Alright, Still” is as pop as Gwen Stefani.
Herbie Hancock and Vince Gill’s nominations in the Album of the Year category (Gill’s album is a 4-CD box set) are both surprises, beating out predicted nominees like Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney. Hancock’s album, in particular (a Joni Mitchell tribute record) seems a bit out of place.
Where the hell is Linkin Park? They have the biggest-selling non-soundtrack album released in 2007, and all they have to show for it are empty hands. With members appearing at the nomination ceremony, you figure they’ve gotta be a little pissed? They’re this year’s most surprising shut out, and the only glaring omission I can think of (aside from Thicke, who enjoyed nealy double-platinum success this year…I’m a bit surprised at Pink’s absence this year as well).
The Foo Fighters? Seriously? I like Dave Grohl as much as the next guy, but has he not made the exact same album six times over the past twelve years?
“Hey There Delilah”, a song even easier to hate than Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat” (which was also inexplicably nominated…for Best Rap Song) gets nominated for Song of the Year?
There are enough female rockers out there. Why has Grammy not yet reinstated the award for Best Female Rock Vocal?
While it’s a bit early to speculate on potential winners, you can find a complete list of this year’s nominees at http://www.grammy.com/
  • The Return Of "At The Wrecka Sto’"…Albeit A Day Late…

There will be a weekly updated new release portion of the actual musichelpweb.com site soon, but in the meantime, there are a million new albums out this week. So, no matter what genre of music you’re a fan of, you should be able to find something to enjoy.

Country fans: While you’re basking in the glow of Reba McEntire’s #1 Album debut (the best first week of sales in Reba’s long and venerable career), you also might wanna check out “Still Feels Good”, the latest release from country
darlings Rascal Flatts. They had 2006’s biggest
selling non-soundtrack album (thanks, “High School Musical”), and this one should be another biggie. For those who like their
country of a somewhat more mature, rootsy variety check out
alt-country troubadour Steve Earle and his Washington Square
    Serenade

Rap fans: You a Black Eyed Peas fan? I’m not, but it’s OK if you are. Band leader will.i.am has a new album out called Songs About Girls. Rumor has it that it’s quite eclectic and artistic in a way that his fellow bandmate Fergie’s album was decidely not.

Classic Pop fans; Not only are there a few Tony Bennett reissues hitting stores, but Queen Latifah unleashes another set of sunny covers with Travelin’ Light. Listen to the Queen (who I caught last night on a very funny “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” rerun…it was strange watching her and Will Smith on the screen knowing that they both have gone on to be Oscar nominated) tackle classics such as “I’m Not In Love” on this release. Meanwhile, not only is Joni Mitchell covered on the new Chaka Khan album (see below for details)…not only is she the subject of a Herbie Hancock-directed tribute album (featuring Corinne Bailey Rae and others), but the Queen of Singer-Songwriters issues her Starbucks-backed Hear Music debut, Shine-which I’ve already heard and HIGHLY recommend.

Rock fans: The Foo Fighters are back! “The Pretender” is the latest in a long line of winning rock songs from Dave Grohl and company. The name of the album is Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

Indie Folks: Iron & Wine (who I remember from the Garden State soundtrack) and Devendra Banhart (who I remember because his name sounds like the name of some girl I went to school with) have new albums out today. I’m sure Pitchfork is already drooling all over both albums.

R&B fans: This is the R&B Super Tuesday of 2007. To wit: Mary J.-in-training Keyshia Cole attempts to conquer the sophomore album demon with Just Like Me. First single “Let It Go” has already had #1 success. Meanwhile, Jill Scott returns for round three with The Real Thing. The singer/songwriter/spoken word artist also has what is a reportedly career-defining role in “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married”, in theaters 10/12 (co-starring Janet Jackson). Fans who prefer their soul a little more on the esoteric side will rejoice in albums from bassist/provocateur Meshell Ndegeocello (The World Has Made Me The Man of My Dreams) and singer Rahsaan Patterson’s Wines & Spirits> Finally, a singer who many soul fans say Rahsaan resembles vocally is back. Chaka Khan is back with Funk This!, her first album of all new material in a decade. Chaka rolls with producers Jam & Lewis on this one, and it also features contributions from former Rufus bandmate Tony Maiden, Michael McDonald and Mary J. Blige.

Lovers of music? This should be a very good week for you!!
