    *It’s a Jonas world, we’re just living in it. If you count the “Camp Rock” soundtrack, the new millennium Hanson now has three albums in the Top 10, including the #1 album, as “A Little Bit Longer” posts the third biggest debut of the year (behind Li’l Wayne and Coldplay).

    *In other ankle-biter news, “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta blasts onto the charts at #2 with “Crush”, besting the #3 debut of “AI” winner David Cook’s “Time of My Life”. It’s fairly obvious who the “Idol” folks are putting their money behind, this is by far the earliest a single by an “Idol” contestant has been released following the season’s conclusion. Shades of Season 2, when the promotional muscle was put behind runner-up Clay Aiken and not winner Ruben Studdard.

    *Now, how about if for former ankle-biters? Debuting just out of view of the Top 20, at #22, is a revised “Greatest Hits” album by New Kids on the Block. This marks NKOTB’s highest chart position since “No More Games-The Remix Album” grazed the Top 20 in 1991, and also bodes quite well for their new album, “The Block”, which arrives in a couple of short weeks. However, I’m a bit confused as to how three songs can be added to a previously released compilation and it can be allowed to chart on Billboard’s regular album chart, while five new tracks were added to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and it was relegated to the catalog list. Anyone care to explain that one?

    *Congrats to Rihanna. Not only does “Disturbia” hang on to the top spot on the pop singles charts, but “Take a Bow” ascends to the #1 position on the R&B singles charts, giving Rihanna such a rare feat (topping two different singles charts with different singles) that I can’t even think of a precedent.

    *Another interesting chart fact to note. Each of this week’s Top 7 albums has done time at #1 on the chart, which is almost certainly some kind of record, although it won’t last next week, where Staind is on track to pop in at #2 behind the Jonases.

    *Olympic fever has spread to the Billboard charts, as Taylor Swift and Chris Brown both enter in the Top 20 with their respective “Team U.S.A.”-endorsed singles. I’m waiting for Michael Phelps to make a record. Right now, that’s a guaranteed #1.

    *Hey, aren’t Ne-Yo’s and Young Jeezy’s albums supposed to be out already?? Both originally had street dates in early August, but it looks like Ne-Yo’s “Year of the Gentleman” has been bumped to mid-August, while I’m not exactly sure when Jeezy’s “The Recession” is supposed to drop. What’s up Def Jam?

    Since this week’s charts aren’t exactly filled with fantastic opportunities to embed video, I’ll leave you guys for the day with a song I’ve been listening to a lot lately, and…the perfect song to put in a Sunday morning column. Behold the awesomeness of Lionel Richie’s ‘fro.

    *This week’s charts are all about two things: “American Idol” and advertising. To wit:

    *Contestants from 4 different seasons of “American Idol” can be found in this week’s Top 20 charts. Aside from David Cook’s two top 20 singles chart debuts (which we discussed a couple days back), 2007’s winner, Jordin Sparks, can be found in the Top 20 of the singles and albums charts, as can 2005’s winner, Carrie Underwood. Meanwhile, 2006 finalist Chris Daughtry is still hanging around, moving up 10 spots to re-enter the Top 20 with his 18-month old debut album.

    *”American Idol” is also to blame for the resurgence of “Apologize”. The Timbaland/OneRepublic song, which has now appeared on the pop, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary and R&B charts, re-enters the Top 20 after OneRepublic performed it with “AI” runner-up David Archuleta on the season finale. The resurgence should be short-lived, as I can’t imagine there being too many people out there who aren’t completely sick of this song.

    *”Idol” also juices a major comeback, as Queen of Disco Donna Summer appears in the Top 20 of the pop albums chart for the first time since “She Works Hard for the Money” in 1983!! “Crayons” is actually Summer’s first album of original material since 1991. Toot-toot…hey…beep beep!! Here’s some old school Donna for ya!!

    *Meanwhile, continuing Ameria’s insatiable appetite for extremely generic rock bands, 3 Doors Down enjoys their second straight debut atop the album charts with their self-titled fourth effort. This band’s success may come as something of a surprise because they’ve traveled so far under the radar. However, not only has the band enjoyed a fairly uninterrupted stream of hit singles since their 2000 debut, but they are the third biggest-selling group of the decade so far, behind Nickelback and…crap, I forget who the second band is, but they’ve sold more records!!

    *Apple’s current advertising campaign is juicing Coldplay’s current success. “Viva La Vida”, the song used in the latest ads for Apple/iPod/iTunes, scales back up the charts this week, becoming Coldplay’s second top 10 hit. Lead singer Chris Martin also scores his first charted single as a solo artist, as Kanye West’s “Homecoming” (which features Martin as a guest artist) enters the singles chart at #96.

  • Something’s David Cook-in’ on The Billboard Singles Chart


    In years past, immediately after an “American Idol” season was over, there would be a commercial single release of the original songs that the final two contestants performed. Typically, these rocketed to the top of the charts. Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken (besting actual winner Ruben Studdard), Fantasia, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks all scored chart-toppers with their initial releases. The first sign that there had to be some kind of retooling came last year when Jordin Sparks’ initial release, “This is My Now”, broke the string.

    So, what the “Idol” folks have done in conjunction with iTunes is make all the performaces from each show available digitally, but the sales were not reported to Soundscan until the week of the show finale, which results in one amazing fact for eventual “Idol” winner David Cook, and one other sort of stinging reality.

    Cook has 11 songs enter the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week, setting a modern-day record for most songs on this chart at one time. The previous record was 8, set by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus about a year and a half ago. I quote this as being a modern-day record because The Beatles actually placed 14 songs on the singles chart back in ’64.

    At any rate, this becomes a semi-dubious distinction because none of Cook’s songs make it all the way to the top-where Lil’ Wayne holds for a second consecutive week with “Lollipop”. “The Time of My Life” slides in at #3 this week. Impressive? Yes, but not a number one, and considering the massive slide that “event” singles generally have in their second week, expect Cook’s number of charted singles to halve on next week’s chart.

    By contrast, David Archuleta was only able to place three songs on this week’s Hot 100-led by his rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” at #36.
