    *So, when the news started to hit about Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon getting married, I actually thought to myself, “Self, whatever happened to Luis Miguel?”. Luis was the Latin superstar Mariah dated between Derek Jeter and (allegedly) Eminem. The Top 10 debut for his latest album answers that question for me. I’m pretty sure Mariah and Luis are the only former couple to share space in the Top 10 this week, unless there was some Toby Keith/Clay Aiken hookup that I didn’t know anything about. Ugh. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

    *Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” makes the second biggest leap to #1 in chart history, climbing 51 spots to the top. The holder for the largest jump is Maroon 5’s “Makes Me Wonder”, from last year. So of course, another debut this week is “If I Never See Your Face Again”, by Maroon 5 featuring Rihanna (see how nicely that came together?). I’ll admit, I liked this song a lot without Rihanna, but she does add a bit of sexual tension to the proceedings (and it’s a much better song than the plodding “Take a Bow”). It’s still a little disturbing though, because I’m pretty sure that Adam Levine has at least a decade on Rih-Rih.

    *Neil Diamond, somewhat improbably, scores the first #1 album of his CAREER with “Home After Dark”. This news definitely threw me for a loop, because I remember watching “America’s Top 10” as a kid and I swore that the “Jazz Singer” soundtrack was omnipresent. I’m surprised it wasn’t a #1 album. According to Wikipedia, it peaked at #3. Wow. Well, congrats to Neil and to producer Rick Rubin for bringing forth Neil’s late-career renaissance. Oh, and “American Idol”, which featured Neil as their guest judge a couple weeks back.

    *After a five year wait, apparently people still care about Gavin DeGraw. I am decidedly *not* one of them.

    *How about this one, folks? Danity Kane (at #10 on the singles chart) is the only group to be found in the entire Top 10 of both the singles AND albums charts! Every one else in the top tier of both lists is either a solo artist, performing a duet (or has a “featured” performance), or is a movie soundtrack. Billboard’s Chart Beat Chat acknowledges that it might be the first time in history that’s occurred.

    *Next week, Death Cab for Cutie will almost certainly debut at #1 on the albums chart (managing to break the solo artist trend), while major moves on the singles chart should come from Usher (whose “Love in This Club Part II, featuring Beyonce, was made available for digital download this week) and NKOTB’s “Summertime”, which is on pace to debut in the Top 40, if not the Top 20.

    *Ahh, screw it, let’s just make it a Rihanna Sunday. Here’s the video for “Take a Bow”. For the record, (and to clarify for the Boston Metro writer who called her a 2-hit wonder), this is her 8th Top 10 single. Umm…and what’s up with that neck tattoo? And isn’t this song just “Irreplaceable” with pianos instead of guitars?

    First, a correction: a couple days ago, I mentioned that Madonna had moved into 2nd place on the list of artists with the most Top 10 hits, jumping ahead of Elvis and standing beside The Beatles. I made a boo-boo. Madonna is actually #1 all by herself with the ascension of “4 Minutes”. My bad, Madge. I checked out the video, and was gonna post it for y’all as a treat. But, alas, I can’t find it anywhere. You guys do the dirty work.
    Country star Trace Adkins parlays his 2nd place finish on “Celebrity Apprentice” to the #1 spot on the country charts and the highest pop placement of his career with “You’re Gonna Miss This”. No word about whether Omarosa saw this and decided she wanted a music career.
    Two of the albums in the Top 20 maintain relatively lofty positions despite a good amount of people not even knowing they’re out. The Gnarls Barkley album actually moves up 6 spots in it’s second release (it wasn’t supposed to be out until April 8th), while The Raconteurs album, which was supposed to be out on April 29th, debuts in the Top 10 despite it’s release date being moved up a full month. Pretty ballsy to see these moves taking place, especially at a time when shortsighted music executives seem to place all their chips on hitting a particular first week number.
    Holy crap! Can someone put “No One” by Alicia Keys out to pasture already?
    It’s a good time to be Ryan Tedder. Who the hell is Ryan Tedder, you ask? Well, not only is he the lead singer and songwriter for the band OneRepublic (represented with two singles in the Top 20), but he, along with former teen-popster Jesse McCartney, co-wrote Leona Lewis’s “Bleeding Love”, last week’s #1 single, which gets displaced this week by Hurricanes Mariah and Madonna.
    With those two albums arriving this month (and Usher being moved from mid-June to late-May), is it safe to say that the next few weeks in the music industry will actually be exciting?

    *Off the chart, the big news is the loud thudding sound made by “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson’s compilation album “Music Club Vol. 1”, which debuted at #50 last week and drops to #137 this week. This development raises two questions: 1) in light of “Idol” finalists with far more impressive sales pedigrees getting relieved of their contracts, is The Dawg going to receive the same unceremonious boot? and 2) Why do I feel like the *other* Randy Jackson (brother of Michael and Janet) could put out an album right now and have a similar or better response at the cash registers?
    *Brit newcomer Leona Lewis enjoys an impressive move to #1 on the charts this week, but her happiness will be short lived, as Mariah Carey (at #15) will see a sales lift next week due to “Touch My Body”‘s iTunes availability. If Mariah makes it to the top, it will be her 18th chart topper, jumping her ahead of Elvis Presley into 2nd place as the artist with the most #1 singles in history (The Beatles are #1, with 20)
    *Gnarls Barkley enjoy an impressive #18 debut with only about a half-week of sales, as their sophomore effort, “The Odd Couple” didn’t arrive in record stores until Thursday or Friday, two to three days after the tracking week began.
    *Chris Brown manages the impressive feet of scoring three songs in the Top 10 this week, a feat that was most recently accomplished by T-Pain last year. Mr. Pain is no slouch himself, with two songs in the Top 10, including one shared with Mr. Brown
    *Lil’ Mama, believe it or not, is only the fourth female rapper to score two Top Ten hits on the pop chart. The others? Li’l Kim, Da Brat and Missy Elliott.
    *Nice week to be Diddy, eh? Not only was the L.A. Times story that implicated him in Tupac’s 1994 shooting revealed to be a fraud, but his proteges Danity Kane enter the charts at #1 for the second time, making them the only female act to debut at #1 with two consecutive albums. Next week, Puff’s boy-band counterpart, Day26, will ALSO enter the charts at the top with their debut. Expect to see lots of Puffy smiling with those little-ass teeth!!
