  • Friday Throwback – Basketball Jones

Disclaimer: This animated video was made in the mid 70s and features very stereotypically drawn characters.

When I was a little kid, my dad would at times, get into a high pitched voice and squeal, “Basaball Jones, I got a basaball jones.”

Notice that it wasn’t “basketball jones”. It was “bas-a-ball jones”. From what I was told, this was a song performed by Cheech and Chong, who weren’t necessarily on my radar as funny men as a child.

Later in high school, I recorded a copy of my dad’s Cheech And Chong’s Greatest Hits CD, which came out in the early 90s. I soon became a victim of a Basketball Jones.

    – Ever since I was a baby, I always be dribbling.

    – The guy with the basketball jones is named Tyrone Shoelaces (thanks Wikipedia, (by the way, check out all the folks on this song)). He kind of looks like a character from Fat Albert.

    – Sometimes I feel too that when I’m at the free throw line of life, I just need a pick. Roll to the basket, and I’ll feed it to you.

    – I didn’t think I would ever see an animated Bill Russell and Chick Hearn in my life. Thank you Basketball Jones.

    – Imagine if you really had the hops to jump and grab a quarter off the top of the backboard. Tyrone Shoelaces would even leave 15 cents change.

    – Even King Kong was rockin’ from side to side.

Chris Rock and Barry White re-did the song for Michael Jordan’s movie Space Jam. It was definitely a G rated version of the song. Chris Rock even called Sylvester the Cat his undercover brother. Before I went searching for the song, I didn’t even know there was an animated video. Thank you Basketball Jones.

  • J. Hud & The Twins Stand Under The “Spotlight”

Jennifer Hudson’s trip from “American Idol”-also ran to Oscar-winning actress began with the release of “Dreamgirls” nearly two years ago. Since then, talk about a transition back to singer in the form of an album has run rampant, with a scheduled release date of late 2007 having come and gone.

Finally, with the release of the single “Spotlight”, an album release date appears to be on the horizon, and the video officially premiered this past Tuesday. While the song (co-written by Ne-Yo, natch) doesn’t exactly have “huge pop single” written all over it, it’s a pleasant enough ditty that calls to mind early-Eighties soul/dance heavyweights like Cheryl Lynn and Evelyn “Champagne” King. It’s one of the few Ne-Yo songs that I can’t identify as his within 10 seconds, and Jennifer (and that ginormous rack) are going full force.

    What do you folks think?

  • Tim McGraw (And His Henchmen) Will Beat Your Ass

Remember a couple of months ago when Faith Hill went off on a fan because they grabbed her hubby Tim McGraw’s nuts at a concert? Well, Faith…Timmy can take care of his damn self.

Apparently this guy was squeezing to the front of the stage and putting a hurtin’ on a female fan as he did so (I mean, come on. Look at the size of the dude). Tim noticed what was going on and did the right thing.

I just love the fact that as this altercation is taking place, Tim’s band just keeps playing as though nothing is going on. If this was a hip-hop concert, the music would have stopped and a multiple-party ass whoopin’ would have commenced.

Tim & Faith: the country Whitney & Bobby…except without the crack.
