  • Eagles Set To Fly By Spring

Billboard is quoting Eagles frontman Don Henley as saying the group’s first new studio album in nearly 20 years will be released this spring. The band’s website is mum on the release, and no tour dates have been announced in support.

Reports in The Los Angeles Times claim that the album will be exclusively available for a year and that the band will indeed tour. The media feeding frenzy began in earnest and bits of the story are floating around the web. I’m personally more inclined to believe the statements Henley made to Billboard and wonder if we’re seeing the final payout for the band that pioneered California country-rock.

I’m still liking Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape, especially the title track. The No Doubt singer put the world on notice with Rich Girl and the rest of her 2004 release. Sweet Escape peaked at #3 on the album charts, but has already thrown off two Top 10 songs. This one is worth adding to your collection.

  • Social Distortion Bassist Dies In Bicycle Accident

A decade before Social Distortion broke big, a variety of musicians played with the band, including bassist Brent Liles.

Liles is now dead at the age of 43 after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a truck.

He played with the band for two years, including an independent release. It wasn’t until six years after he left the group that Social Distortion broke through to mainstream success with a self-titled release on Epic.

I was disappointed that Prince didn’t introduce anything new at yesterday’s Super Bowl although he certainly rocked the house. Meanwhile, Nelly Furtado’s Say It Right from Loose is sort of bland in comparison although it is selling massive quantities. Check out the iTunes exclusive copy for a nice twist on that and Promiscuous.

  • Billy Comes Back

Not exactly the strongest vocalist when he was in his prime, former pop star Billy Joel will sing the national anthem in today’s Super Bowl. He has done Star Spangled Super Bowl duties before, and luckily, gets to perform before Prince, rather than after.

Joel also announced through his music company that All My Life, a ballad he wrote for his wife, will be streamed live on People magazine’s web site for a week beginning February 7. The song will then be for sale exclusively on iTunes for two weeks.

All My Life is the first pop music Joel has released since 1993’s River of Dreams. During the intervening 14 years, the Piano Man has seen public breakups and marriages, tours all over the world with Elton John (a fantastic show), rehab and car accidents and the blossoming career of 20 year old daughter Alexa, whose birth may have contributed more material to the Billy Joel song catalog than any other event.

Knock ’em dead, Billy. The now 58 year old singer rarely won critical acclaim. His vocals during today’s football game will undoubtedly be massacred in the media. But just maybe one of pop music’s best songwriters ever recaptured the magic in All My Life.

Why, the River of Dreams, of course. Sure, I could listen to new stuff, but I have to get in the mood for a long awaited return.
