  • Chinese Democracy, i’ll belive it when i see it!

Every once and a while a new story comes long that is only true to certain people. If you are the kind of person that believes a person’s character is what it is and have no time to give second chances, please stop reading right now. However, if you are one of those people that believe in redemption and that people can change keep reading. I offer you this one caution; don’t believe a word that Axl Rose says until there is action to support those words.

For Guns n’ Roses fans, the term Chinese Democracy has great meaning. Broken Dreams, false hope and frustration are just a few of the meanings that come to mind when someone says Chinese Democracy to me. Chinese Democracy is the name of the next Guns n’ Roses album. However in this case, next is a timeless expression. It has been years since the album has been rumored to be released by the newest version of Guns n’ Roses. There comes a point at which people stop waiting for something and start praying for it. However, rock fans prayers may have finally been answered (before reading the rest of this blog, refer to the first paragraph’s caution statement).

According to an AP report, on Saturday night, radio host Eddy Trunk’s weekly classic rock talk show was co-hosted by Skid Row frontman Sebastin Bach. The discussion between the two turned to Guns n’ Roses. That’s when Bach jumped into action and placed a call to fellow frontman Axl Rose’s cell phone. Axl picked up and the call went live on the air. For shits and giggles, Bach asked Rose about the long awaited Chinese Democracy album. Axl responded by saying the album will come out “Sometime this fall or late fall…It will be out this year.”

On the surface, it would be easy to get excited over Rose’s comments. The comments should be reason to believe that the decade long rumors of Chinese Democracy being released were finally coming true. However, this is Axl Rose talking, which means lies, bullshit and more bullshit. We have been down this road again, and each time it has lead to more disappointment and frustration. If the man could only be as honest as well as he could sing and do his famous snake-like moves on stage then I might actually take his comments seriously. However, once a liar, always can be a liar.

Upon further thought, if you think about the title of the album (Chinese Democracy), maybe this album will never come out. Will there ever be democracy in China, probably not. Is this Axl Rose’s idea of a sick joke? Possibly. What makes this new fuel on the fire worse is their are also rumors circulating that former Gn’R guitarist Slash may rejoin the band.

I as well as many other rock fans have been jerked around too many times by Axl Rose to believe him. The boy who cried wolf eventually got eaten, and what comes around goes around, so I can’t even be angry. I’m confident that if Axl is jerking us around again, that I won’t be the chain he’s pulling. But how awesome would it be to hear a new Guns n’ Roses album?

  • Rapper Proof Killed, Pointer Sister Passes Away

The world of hip-hop is one that has a tragic tendency toward lyrics that display a glorification of violence, drug use and death. It’s unfortunate, but this is due in part to the fact that most rappers both grew up and live in situations where those things are far too common. Lyrics seem to mirror actions and because of that hip-hop gets the credit of being a journalistic outlet with the clearest lens you would ever see through, the eyes of the people involved. We are reminded time to time of how real the life of a rapper can become.

One of those times came early Tuesday when rapper Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton was shot and killed in front of a Detroit nightclub in the wee hours of the morning. Unlike some killings of rap legends such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls and Big L, it seems Proof fired the first shot in an apparent gun battle which left the man he shot, 35-year old Keith Bender Jr. with a bullet wound to the head. The club all of this violence happened at, Club CCC on Detroit’s famed Eight Mile Road, was apparently operating at an illegal hour of the night. This is reportedly the third shooting in or around Club CCC. The rest of the details of the shooting including who actually shot the rapper are unclear as of yet.

Proof becomes the second rapper in the group D12 to be murdered. Previously in 1999 another member of D12, Bugz was brutally killed during an altercation that got out of hand at an amusement park in Detroit. D12 was reportedly supposed to begin work on its next album this month. Details of whether that will change are not clear yet. This also mark’s another in what has become a long chain of events that have left rapper Eminem devastated. A couple of weeks ago, friend and fellow rapper Obie Trice was shot on a Detroit freeway but survived. Just a few days ago, Eminem filed for divorce from his wife Kim. Proof was Eminem’s best man at the ceremony. In addition, the killing is eerily similar to Eminem’s “Toy Soldiers” video, in which Proof is shot and killed on a Detroit street. Newly divorced and with the killing of a close friend and fellow rapper on his mind, Eminem’s world seems to be a little more gloomy.

In other sad news, June Pointer of the Pointer Sisters passed away at the age of 52 on Tuesday at a Los Angeles hospital. June Pointer reportedly died of an undisclosed form of cancer. On her own, June recorded a top 30 R&B single “Ready for Some Action” in 1983. However, she will probably be best known for her work with her sisters, which included three Grammy awards and numerous top 100 Billboard singles. Some of the groups most well known songs include “He’s So Shy”, “Automatic” and perhaps their most recognizable hit “”Jump (For My Love)”. The Pointer Sisters songs were featured in some scenes in the 2003 hit film “Love, Actually”. In the film Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister of England and listens to the songs of The Pointer Sisters throughout the movie.

Oh but this blog isn’t just about hip-hop, it’s about all music. We’ll take on all things music from rap to rock and even a little bit of country.

Without further ado…. Today’s whammy by far goes to Marshall Mathers or for those of you not big on hip-hop, Eminem.

Unfortuantely, the love sick Marshall Mathers (Eminem) and now twice ex-wife Kim are splitting after Marshall filed for divorce on Wednesday. Their second marriage lasted less than 90 days. As we have come to find out through Eminem’s music, Kim Mathers isn’t the kind of woman to just go into the night quietly, and she was ready to give her side of the story right away.

Kim called the popular Detroit radio show Mojo in the Morning on Thursday, just one day after the divorce was announced and said, “I was hoping we could go to counseling and work things out, but he sent an attorney to my house with papers and said that [Marshall] filed for divorce.” She went on to say that Em hadn’t spoken with her over a month.

Kim also talked about how Marshall has fallen back into his old drug addiction, an addiction that she herself has experienced: “I see him doing a lot of the same things I did when I had my problem. I see exactly the same pattern that I was falling in.” Just last year, Eminem checked himself into a drug rehab center for an addiction to sleeping pills.

However, Eminem’s camp didn’t hesitate to respond to Kim’s allegations. According to the same site, Eminem responded by email, “…a few of Kim’s statements in the interview this morning need to be addressed. First, her allegations regarding my status post-rehab are both untrue and unfortunate. Second, she was aware that I was filing for divorce. We both tried to give our marriage another chance and quickly realized that a wedding doesn’t fix the underlying problems.”

Eminem has in recent months claimed he was done making music himself in order to focus on production of other artists. A contingent of rap fans that felt that Eminem’s last album, Encore, was mediocre. Some critics feel that as Eminem’s fame and money have grown, he has lost things to rap about — his edge.

Could this most recent development between Marshall and Kim light a fire under this once great rapper’s ass and motivate the old Em to get back in the studio? Rap fans hope that the Eminem from The Marshall Mathers LP comes back and records another classic.
