You know what’s bad? Today’s Monday, I compiled this list on Thursday, and now all the smart-ass remarks I was gonna make have all been forgotten. Damn it.
*T.I. scores the biggest jump to #1 of any song in history with “Whatever You Like”, the first single from his upcoming “Paper Trail”. Proof that, after violating probation by purchasing a small cache of automatic weapons, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Especially if you’re completely untalented. As you can probably tell, I’m not a fan.
*Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” single and “Rock & Roll Jesus” album have combined to produce the story of the summer, as the album moves all the way up to the #2 spot on the charts nearly a full year after its’ release. Neither single nor album is available for digital download, so that means that over 2 million people have hauled ass to record stores to pick up “Rock & Roll Jesus”. Proof that people will still buy physical music when motivated. Granted, I’d rather it be someone *other* than Kid Rock proving this theory, but I guess we can’t be choosy when it comes to things like that.
*”All Summer Long” has become such a hit that a cover version by a bunch of anonymous studio singers has popped onto iTunes and lands all the way in the Top 20 of the singles charts, proving that either people are stupid or incredibly lazy.
*Pink scores the highest debut of her career with “So What?”, the first single from her upcoming FIFTH album (wow, how crazy is that?). I talked about this song a couple weeks back, and after seeing the video, I like it even more. Is Carey Hart (Pink’s ex-husband) one hell of a good sport or what?
*Has the bloom fallen off Ice Cube’s rose? Not only does “Raw Footage” score the lowest first week sales of any Ice Cube album recorded in the Soundscan era, but his latest film is tanking at the box office. More incredible than that is the fact that the movie (whose name I can’t recall and am too lazy to look up) was directed by FRED DURST. Yes, the Limp Bizkit dude is now directing movies. No, real movies. Not porno.
*Looks like all the David Archuleta fans got their early fix and are now abandoning ship, as “Crush” slides thirteen spots to #15 in its’ second week on the chart. In more positive “Idol” news, “One Step at a Time” becomes Jordin Sparks’ third Top 20 single, so there might be a little bit of steam left in the franchise.
*If this column seems a bit more listless than usual this week, take a look at the charts and then ask again why I don’t have a whole lot to say. Granted, I could probably make a few more Shwayze and Cheetah Girls jokes, but then those things just kind of write themselves, don’t they?
